I think the point is that religion has been used as an excuse to
perpetrate all sorts of actions, when actually the real motivation is
entirely different (most commonly customs and possession of resources).
Look at the war in Chechnya which has nothing to do with Islam and
everything to do with the oil and gas pipeline running from Baku
through Grozny to Moscow. And that sort of disingenuity is not
limited to Muslims either.
