Sounds more and more like an AGE disease where proteins are deformed
by abnormal glycations and form new tertiary structures, like the
typical beta-pleated sheet that prions form.

In case, it is possible that the reason is rather in a fatal
combination of too high sugar use in diet and lack of antioxidants.
