No, it is NOT normal. Your builder is N U T S. Only time gas should smell
is when the burner is first opened and not lit for some reason. At any
other time, it is a leak. You don't want leaks, especially if the base is
enclosed. .
Check that the tank is properly connected for the first step. Perhaps it
did not seat properly when the line was put on. You can mix a soapy
solution and see if you get bubbles on the joints when you put the soap on.
It should be an easy fix.
