It's to prevent people from picking up a product off the shelf in the
store, claiming they had previously purchsed it, and trying to return it
for a refund. If the customer doesn't have a receipt, most stores will
still issue a refund or, at least, a store credit. Having the sticker
applied as you enter gives them some assurance that you had, indeed,
previously purchsed the item(s).
