Got a 5 liter box as a xmas gift. Says on the box how great the package
is at keeping the product "fresh" after opening, then on the side is printed "use by june 05" Since we'll never drink six bottles of this "chillable red" at one time, wondering if anyone ever tried putting this stuff in bottles for longer storage or if the quality is even worth it. Think if I cork it up & let 'er sit for a few years it'll improve any?? |

In those years before I started making wine I bought gallon bottles of Carlo
Rossi Burgundy, poured into standard wine bottles, inserted a used cork part way, wrapped with duct tape and opened a bottle when needed. I think the wine kept very well but I would drink a gallon up in a month or so. I wouldn't think a box wine would improve with age. Seems like they are designed to be ready to drink when you buy them. But, by dividing the wine up into regular glass bottles you may be able to store the wine better. Whether or not aging will improve the wine is dependant upon what was done to it before it was bottled. Dice up some melon, grapefruit, lime and apples and add a few cinnamon sticks and enjoy a homemade sangria. |

My daughter likes the Franzia Chillable Red, my wife and I prefer the Red Sangria or White Sangria by Almaden, in 5 liter boxes. We use it as a daily wine, because of its modest price. Checking my wine records, I find that we usually use a 5 L box in a month or so (along with the several bottled wines that we drink). If you find that you want some better quality boxed wine, we find that the 3 L boxes of Hardy's Cabernet are identical in taste to the 750ml bottles. For long term storage, the plastic sealed bag is not recommended, but for short-term, it does not let oxygen in (when it gets almost empty, you have to let some air in to get the rest of the liquid out). Franzia, it is. I'm gonna drink some & bottle some & see what happens.
Nothing invested but a few bottles (at this point in time, used) & a coupla corks. Thanks for the input. |
