Default 4 bottles after a 5L carboy?

I now happily own a half-dozen 5 gallon carboys.

Or I thought it was happily.

I racked a batch into one of these to store for a few months, expecting
two and a partial bottles to be left over.

Nope.

*four* full bottles after filling to the neck.

Yikes.
