My favorites are vinho verdes and a nice little red wine called Charamba.

I seem to remember a sparkling rose table wine that came in ceramic
bottles. It was quite popular in the U.S. in the 1950's, and many of
the better restaurants served it. However, I don't remember the name -
it was on the sweet side, so I didn't much care for it.

"Mateus Rose" came in a reddish-brown ceramic bottle. There was another that
came in a greyish ceramic bottle.

The best of the best is a wine called Barca Velha. This red wine is produced
by a port wine company called Ferreira and it is also one of the most
expensive portuguese wines. It is produced in the port wine region, and I
strongly suggest it.

If you like something a little bit less expensive I suggest you to try a red
wine called Duas Wuintas. This one is also produced by a port wine comnpany
called Ramos Pinto, but is also a very fine red wine.

Anything from Cortes de Cima, especially the Incognito.

Casa da Alorna 1999 is also very good at a cheap price

Barca Velha is overpriced, in my opinion.......

But one theory as to the origin of the word is a 20% fee that farmers
had to pay to the land owners.
OTOH, Porto Editora traces the word back to the Latin word 'quintana'
= pequeno mercado no acampamento = small market in an army camp.
(not sure if that is what 'acampamento' means in this context - please
correct anyone who can)

Both Duas Quintas and Charamba are among Portuguese wines readily
available all over the world. Of the two, Duas Quintas is better and more
expensive.

Neither are truly representative of better Portuguese wines, which are
typically not exported at least through the usual high volumes circuits.

I think the wines made by Luis Pato are among the finest made in
Portugal, or Europe, for that matter.

Where I live we are lucky to get Lancers and Mateus, both rosés. But
fortunately I like both of them, even if they are somewhat bottom-end.
While in Portugal, I drink mostly vinho verde. It all tastes pretty
good to me.

Lancers and Mateus are hardly wine.

Luis Pato is a wine producer in the Bairrada region, his wines are indeed
very good (and expensive).
