So I went into the wine room the other day and found a significant
amount of green fuzzy mold on the basket press - the wood parts in
particular. It seems there was some water in the basement through a
closet in the wine room that went undetected. Needless to say I have
to clean this thing. We sprayed it down with a strong hose, which
seemed to knock most of the visible stuff off the press, but do any of
you suggest any methods for disinfecting it other than bleach? Would
B-Brite do the trick?

As for the wine room, I plan to take everything out of there and clean
down the walls and floors with the same cleaner and let it air out for
a while before putting stuff back in. Has anyone had any experience
with this sort of issue?

I would use bleach on wood but rinse it well. You can always hit it
after rinsing well with a solution of citric acid. Mold in a barrel
is a hard thing to fix but maybe you can search around for info on
that...

Oxiclean. Mix it at a strong level and soak the wood.

I had a similar issue, and ended up sanding and refinishing the
slats. Unbolted the slats, took a hand sander to them to remove the
old varnish (which was cracked - that's where the growth was), then
applied a new double coat of varnish (I think it was a urethane - I
got the refinishing tips from a post here a couple of years ago).

No problems since, though I'm also more careful about storage.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to do a good soak and scrub in B-
Brite. then maybe pour boiling water over it for kicks.
As for refinishing it, what sort of varnish is food safe? also, I
would like to refinish the metal bottom, is there a food safe enamel I
should use?

Search "press varnish" in this group, and you'll find two previous
threads, with pro and con info. For me, I've had no regrowth, no wine
discoloration from obvious dissolving of the varnish, and I'm not any
nuttier than I was before the varnish job.
