My wife and I will be in Vegas at xmas, and are looking for some
recommendations for good liquor and wine stores.... I like single malts, and we both like fine wine and especially champagnes. Any help is greatly appreciated! (We will be staying at the Venetian, so that will be our starting point) |

Will you have a car? If so, most (self included) will recommend Lee's
Discount Liquor (or something like that--look it up). They have like six stores, and you want the one that is big, so call one and ask. I know where it is, but I don't knwo the street off hand. It's up to the top of the strip, then left on Sunset, then several miles, I think. You'll need to drive in any case. Everything on the strip is wildly overpriced. I lived in the area (Park City, UT) and vacationed in Vegas several times a year, to qualify. Oh, and your luck will be better with malts than wine, although they do have a legit cellar. Vegas is nothing like New York, though. It's all about slushy drinks, Bud, and Elvis impersonations, not quality. That's a generalization, of course. Best of luck! John |

Selection is not too big, but they have some good stuff. The wine lists at many of the restaurants are fantastic, though. Dimitri |

And so are the prices. Though I did get some ok champagne for a fairly
good price at some liquor store off the strip. The name escapes me now though. But I have been to several Vegas liquor stores and none of them had a very good selection of Single Malts. |

I think he meant Las Vegas, Denmark ;-) There's only one Vegas. I guess
you've never been? It's kind of a cross between Monte Carlo, the Sahara desert, Disney Land, and Madrid...without the class. |

I can second the recommendation to go off-strip to stock your liquor supply if you're going to be in town a while. Where exactly doesn't matter much, it'll be so much cheaper than the strip hotels it's a bargain. |

When we were there the smoke from the bar was so bad you could not taste anything. Overpriced is an understatement. I reiterate my recommendation of Lee's Discount Liquors to stock up. We just had lunch at The Burger Bar at Mandalay Place (http://www.usmenuguide.com/burgerbar.htm). It is not to be missed if you have the chance. They have gourmet hamburgers. A lot of places on the strip will give you a $100 meal for $200 and you leave feeling ripped off. This place was expensive, but worth every penny. Their burgers are better than most steaks. They allow corkage. I got cut off before I could find out how much. I kept thinking that the only thing that could improve the experience was a vintage Bordeaux from my cellar. We will know for next time. And there will be a next time. The wine store at Mandalay Place is worth a look. Only look, don't buy anything. Talk about overpriced. Fred. |

I live in Vegas and Lee's is the way to go if you have transportation.
You may be tempted to try "55 degrees" at Mandalay bay, but pass. Obviously this is very pricy. I found Lee's when I was looking for Amarula, which is not always easy to find. I now order online at the Big Wine Shop because the price is better. Lee's Discount Liquor has a large selection, so I'm sure you'll be able to find what you want. I find the only issue is that I over spend when I go in there. Since a lot of folks drink wine here, you'll probably be surprised at the selections in the local (not near strip) grocery stores. Selections are good and so are prices. Lee's 1780 SOUTH RAINBOW BLVD LAS VEGAS, NV 89146 Phone: (702) 870-6300 This is about 8 miles from the strip. From the Venetian you could go (from Las Vegas Blvd) straight down Flamingo to S Rainbow and turn right. Or. go N. on the strip to Sahara (turn left) and down to S. Rainbow. Its REAL close to the corner of Sahara and S. Rainbow. Hope this helps. Also, while at home, check out the site I mentioned. If you drink a lot of wine (buy by the case) or can't find something locally, I've found they have lots of choices. I also take advantage of the 10% of a case discount one of their merchants offers. Good luck when you arrive. If you're staying through New Years, the fireworks are out of site! |

I live in Las Vegas and can highly recommend Lee's Discount. I
stumbled on it when I first moved here looking for Amarula - $200 worth of wine later...you get the picture. I now order it on line at the Big Wine Shop for a better price - its hard to find. Great selection and good prices. Its about 8 miles off the strip: 1780 S Rainbow Blvd Since you'll have a car - either take Flamingo or Sahara from Las Vegas Blvd to S. Rainbow (turn right). Its practically on the corner of Sahara and S. Rainbow. It'll take you about 15 min to get there. Don't be tempted to go to "55 degrees" at Mandalay Bay - very pricy of course. For wine also try local (not near the strip) grocery stores. You'll be really surprised at the selection and prices (we love our wine in Vegas). Since you'ee out and about, try the selection at Whole Foods (8855 W Charleston Blvd- 3 miles from Lee's) From Lee's go north on Rainbow, and Charleston is a couple blocks down (turn left). This will give you a nice little tour of the residential areas. Although I like Lee's we tend to buy by the case so we've been taking advantage of a 10% case discount at the Big WIne Shop. Might want to check them out from home (http://www.bigwineshop.com). I wish you good luck while you're here! |
