1998 Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Grands Epenots
I bought a mixed group of Girardin Burgundy back in 2000 of about 40 bottles at closeout prices from the local distributor. Burgundy is/was not a big seller in Ohio wine stores generally speaking. I paid about $50 on average and have been quietly drinking them over the years. Last night I rediscovered a stash of a dozen or so bottles an opened one with diner. Yep.
1998 Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Grands Epenots-Opened for 30 minutes then poured no decanting. Clear, pale red in the glass with faint bricking. Nose of slightly overripe cherries and plums with strong wet gravel notes and exotic spice notes. Shocking intensity with the initial sips, red cherries, chamomile tea, currants, Asian spices good acidity but well balanced. We enjoyed over the course of the evening and it kept improving showing more and ore sweet fruit notes and gaining a bit of weight and complexity. Nice, well aged Burgundy. "B++" PS....Just returned from wintering in S. Florida. Good to be back. |

"B++" I spoke with the owner of a wine store I seldom visit and he recommended I try out Pommard as its more powerful than most Burgundy - seems true by your note? And he has a 1998 Pommard at a good price. Hospice de Beaune, Pommard, Louis Max. Might be a good chance to try aged burgundy? |

Hospice de Beaune, Pommard, Louis Max. Might be a good chance to try aged burgundy? Without know provenence I would be careful. Pommard it typically a bit "tougher" given it's terroir and vineyard geography but Im not sure about powerful. Let us know how it turns out. |
