That's how they end up in Bordeaux when they taste too many wines ;-)

A horizontal (tasting) is a tasting of several different wines from
the same vintage.

In the same league: A vertical is a tasting of one wine in
different vintages.

The normal usage would be: "I attended a Bordeaux 1995 horizontal"
or "I'll go to a Chteau Palmer vertical".

Or a Margaux -97 horizontal or a Ch.Margaux vertical.
Some estates do make more than one wine in any year, of course - how about a
Knoll 2002 horizontal... :-) Well, in that latter case that expression may
be a bit superfluous... :-)

One of the largest horizontals is the Union des Grands Crus de
Bordeaux tasting week every year in March/April. Up to half a
thousand wines - cask samples of the previous vintage - wait for a
crowd of some 120 press plus 3000+ trade people.
