2005 Clos des Papes CNP
I grilled some wild venison chops last night and opened my first
bottle of 2005 Clos Des Papes CNP. Fairly deep reddish purple in the glass with a fair amount of gylcerin hanging on the sides of the glass. Nose of red rasperry, black pepper and asian spice. Medium weight on the palate, plenty of sweet ripe red and blackberry up front with a fair amount of plummy flavors. A bit of bittersweet chocolate and black coffee on the fisnish. Firm but smooth tannins. A really good wine now but will get better over the next 3-5 years. "A-" |

"A-" I'm a traditionalist in not touching my CdPs until 12 or so years past vintage (right now, I'm drinking up my '94s and beginning to think of my '98s). Still, it's good to hear about this wine. Do you detect a change in style from the '90s? Just curious... Mark Lipton -- alt.food.wine FAQ: http://winefaq.cwdjr.net |

I really started to notice it in the 2001 vintage. I think the proportion of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah are still the same but the ripeness levels and the alcohol seems higher as I think the 2005 is at 15.3% and the wines from the 90's didin't exceed 14%. The wine is a mouthful to be sure! |

I think this is part of the growing trend to hold wines less time and drink them earlier. It seems that very few wines are going the other way. |
