Default “I would rather be able to appreciate things I can not have than to have things I am not able to appreciate.” (Elbert Hubbard)

Does that have any meaning anymore considering that people now take
their own personal likes and dislikes so seriously?

Depends how you interpret "have". You need to taste wine to
appreciate it - you only have it in the colloquial sense of having a
sip, or having a glass of the wine.

Possessing a bottle gives me very little pleasure. And indeed if it
truns out to be corked it never will.
