Tonight, with a makeshift dinner of leftover smoked ham, cornichons,
salad and fingerling potatoes, we opened: 2000 Bott-Geyl Gewurztraminer Furstentum GC color: deep golden nose: honey, apricot, floral perfume, spice palate: medium body, slightly sweet, balancing acidity In trying to think of a wine to pair with a smoked ham, this wine struck me as the likely choice. Not bad at all, as it happened, though there was little to no synergy between the wine and the food. Although the wine seemed a bit flabby at first, cooling it further brought the acidity into focus and revealed it as a well-balanced wine. The rather obvious botrytis character of the wine didn't obscure the varietal character, but it was still rather sweeter than our preferred version of Gewurztraminer. Mark Lipton |

Are they usually fairly dependable? |
