DANGERS OF SEA FOOD DURING PREGNANCY

I am confusled. Experts, on a daily basis, expound the virtues of Omega-3, best obtained from oily fish (tuna and salmon) to ward off cancer, heart disease, coughs, colds and pimples on ones' bum! For years, many have admired the longevity of the Japanese, put down, in the main, to their diet of fish. Most of the peoples of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia gained their protein from seafood. Most peoples living in and around the Arctic circle relied on a plentiful supply of fish and other seafood, over the millennia - as did the populations of every country with any length of coastline. So, here is my dilemma - SWMBO and I have just relaxed after a fruitful day in the springtime sun, mowing lawns and cleaning up the garden. I have uncapped a lightly chilled bottled of 2007 Tohu Sauvignon Blanc. I have a platter consisting smoked salmon, some fresh crayfish and some lovely, plump, garlic marinated green lipped mussels. My neighbour has just dropped in four, fresh snapper fillets (not one hour from the ocean) which I intend to lightly pan fry with lemon, to go with a fresh green salad. Like my fat friend from France, this porky Polynesian believes that life is too short to deny oneself the simple pleasures of life: and that the words "Sauvignon Blanc" and "seafood" should always be intertwined and spoken reverently: thus conjuring images of summer, sand and sunshine in a southern land. Nope - if it means that I shall never fall pregnant; well, some sacrifices are worth it. -- st.helier |

Dear Emery, Just so you don't have nightmares, take a look at ....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zea...-lipped_mussel One can buy these little beauties, live, in the shell, in just about every supermarket in the country. Interestingly, the flesh of the male of the species is a cream colour, while that of the female is orange. However, there is no difference in taste. As that venerable and cunning linguist, Fatty from Forges would say "Yum, yum, yum!" -- st.helier |

The green edged mussels (not so little in my experience, in fact bigger than regular mussels) from NZ are delicious and readily available in the US. I even came across a restaurant recently with them in Vietnamese-style ginger sauce; great too! -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

The greenness of the lips applies only to the shell. The mollusc within, while larger than your average European mussel, has no noticeable lips of any hue. Unlike the large mussels from Spain, which didn't impress me when I bought them (but that could be more the choice of the importer) the green lipped mussels are a veritaible gastronaut's delight. I remember with indigestion but pleasure the 68 individual animlns Jacquie & I consumed when we bought a nominal 2 dozen from "Mussel Boys" in Kaikoura. We wanted to make a laksa lemak but felt that all 68 would have overwhelmed the rather small chicken breast we had previously planned to marry them with! So we had about 30 on toast as a starter, with the remaining 3 doz in the soup. Without a sauvignon blanc, because we'd not planned to drink with the laksa! Life's simple pleasures. Just as well Jacquie wasn't pregnant. -- All the best Fatty from Forges |
