Greetings,

I'm new to the group. I have a keen interest in Spanish wines,
particularly cabs. Does anyone have any experiences with these,
especially from the Penedes region.

thks

Jean Leon has been making these for a long time in the Penedes. I
recently had the 1994 Riserva and it was delicious.

What do you think about Torres? Toilet water?

Torres has more or less all qualities in stock - but AFAIR no toilet water
nor flush water ;-)

regards.

The Torres Black Label (now Mas la Plana) was fantastic in the late
'70s. I had several wonderful bottles of the '78 and '79 back in the
mid-'80s. My impression is that more recent Mas la Plana wines have
been less impressive, for whatever reason, but still decent examples of
Cabernet Sauvignon.

Are Spanish wines your speciality? Or are you just generally
knowledgeable?

Take a look at www.grimau.com and let me know if you've tried any of
this Catalyn wine.

They were good even into the 90s, I've got a friend who liked them a lot
and sometimes served. Haven't had one in a long time.

As it happens we drank a Sangre de Torro (I think that's the spelling)
a couple of nights ago, it was nothing special but had good fruit and
decent balance. Correct for 3.50 EU.

Torres Mas La Plana continues to be a good wine and probably one of the
best qpr of the Torres lineup. The 2000 is really, really good. But,
somehow, it is not a fancy wine in Spain.

Sangre de Toro is not Cabernet Sauvignon (I really do not understand a
preference for Spain AND Cabernet Sauvignon, since most of Spanish red wine
is Tempranillo and Grenache) but Grenache and Cariñena (called Mazuelo by
Torres, but it is just another name of Cariñena). It is a nice inexpensive
wine that I enjoy.

I am trying to think of good Cabs from Spain but it is tough. Some good
ones come from Torres as Mas La Plana, Marqués de Griñón made an
interesting one from his vineyard in Malpica de Tajo and some wines from
Somontano (in Huesca) like Enate Reserva.

Best,

S.

Sangre de Toro (with the obligatory plastic bull around the neck) was
one of our "house wines" during graduate school, with an occasional
splurge to Torres's Gran Sangre de Toro when we felt particularly
wealthy. IIRC, it was then (ca. '86) about $4 US for the Sangre de
Toro. Now I see it for closer to $10 and it's not the same bargain.
Still, though, it's a decent example of a Garnacha/Carniñena blend, as
you say.

Yeah, I agree and it's a pretty good match to paella. You can still
get it for around $6 at some spots here in Dallas.
