Greek Ouzo Cake
submitted by butterflydog Cake: 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, melted and cooled 6 large eggs, well beaten 2 teaspoons baking soda, dissolved in the beaten eggs 1 cup finely chopped, sliced almonds 2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup plain yogurt (try to use Greek yogurt, it's thicker and richer) 2 ounces ouzo ( liquor ) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves Syrup: 3 cups granulated sugar 2 cups water 1 whole lemon, sliced 4 cinnamon sticks 10 whole cloves For Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Grease a 9x13x2 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together with a mixer. Put mixture into the greased pan. Bake for 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. For Syrup: Put all ingredients in medium saucepan and slowly boil for 30 minutes. Remove from heat to cool. Cool, take out lemon, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves, and pour cooled syrup over hot cake. Let cool completely.
