Papaya Salad (in Thai: Som Tam)
I guess the Papaya Salad is the most popular salad in Thailand. Even across the borders of Thailand the Papaya Salad is famous. The fresh tasty flavor, combined with the sharpness of little chilies makes this salad a unique experience on hot summer day. Thais do eat this salad as a snack or together with chicken or fish from the barbeque. There are very many different kinds of preparing. Many of these creations have their origin in the rural areas of Thailand. I would like to present here the most frequently occurring variant, the Som Tam Thai. This spicy salad can be prepared completely simply as a recreating tasting cucumber salad. In the parentheses the specified supplements can be used as spare products for the Papaya salad. 1 green Papaya ( 1 big cucumber) 2-3 Chilies (can be more or less) 2 Carrots, 3 long Beans 2 Tomatoes 20 gr. dried Scrimps (dried Fish in very small pieces) 20 gr. Peanuts 1 Tablespoon Palm sugar (can be brown Sugar as well) 1 Teaspoon Fishsauce (Salt) 1/4 Lemon with pale, 1-2 Garlic pieces Put the Garlic, Scrimps, Peanuts, Chilies, the sliced Tomatoes, the fine sliced Carrots and Beans in your mortar and grind this softly. Now add the Lemon, Sugar and the Fish sauce into it and mix everything together. Cut the Papaya (Cucumber) into small and fine stripes and mix it within the mortar together with the other ingredients. During the mixing everything should be slightly grinded. Tip: The salad will be served on a flat plate and it is decorated with salad or cabbage. This salad you can eat as a snack or with sticky rice. Try it! :-) Mon see more at http://www.monsmade.com -- Rec.food.recipes is moderated by Patricia Hill at . Only recipes and recipe requests are accepted for posting.
