Pickling day
Just got back from the farmer's market, bought 12 lbs cukes and 3 lbs
sweet onions, gonna make sweet pickles today. Unfortunately we have no bees this year so the cuke crop is mighty sparse. Need to get some pickles made so, boo hoo, had to buy cukes for the first time in years. If we were intent on staying here another year I would call a local beekeeper to put a hive in, did that one year way back and got bumper fruit and vegetable crops that year. We will be picking green beans again on Monday, looks like the plants have recovered and are producing well again. A recent, almost two inch, rain didn't hurt matters either. Yellow squash have been producing just enough to have squash two or three times a week but it looks like the squash plants are putting on lots of babies so may have to pickle some more soon. Tomatoes are going crazy, looks like everyone in the area is getting bumper crops. We're eating them as fast as we can but the plants are gaining on us. Don't like to can or freeze them anymore so looks like a diet of bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches for the near future. George |
