SETP & BBB Received, Gardening Struggles
Last week, I ordered SETP and the newest BBB from University of
Maine's Extension Service. My husband picked them up at the post office this morning - woot! I can't wait to try some new recipes. Now if only our garden would cooperate. Our "harvest", and I use the term loosely, has been a little small this year. So far I've picked a total of ten snow peas, three cucumbers, two beets and three green beans. The weather finally started warming up last month but it's still one of the coolest summers in about 15 years. I'll probably get quite a few more cucumbers since I planted several pickling plants and they don't have to get as big (I may end up with gherkins at this rate, though!). I'll check on the carrots this weekend and I'm pretty sure I'll get few pounds of parsnips later in the year. Oh and the yukon gold potatoes I planted (some I didn't get around to eating and didn't want to toss) look pretty good. I have two or three tiny pumpkin and one cantaloupe. So I'm off to the farm stands and farmers' markets for everything else. On the canning to do list for the weekend is pickled beets (in half pints since my Beloved doesn't eat them) and making some more room in the chest freezer - we still have several pounds of pears and apples from last year. Depending on how many more cucumbers are ready to be picked, I may do up a jar or two of refrigerator pickles. Cheers! |
