Brick & Morter store for canning supplies?
 

My wife is looking for a store in the North San Francisco Bay Area
where she can buy canning supplies.
I know there are many online sources but she wants a store she can walk
into and browse.
We live in Vallejo the closer the better.
Can anyone help me locate a store?

Y'all have a Walmart close by? They usually have a lot of stuff. Ours is
currently out of stuff, they tell me it's "seasonal." Must not be our
season, cause we only get 2: Summer and January.
Big Lots or the Dollar Stores sometimes have a good deal, too.
We have a couple of high end cooking stores, but the equipment is sparse
and usually more expensive than online even.

Most big grocery stores have canning supplies. Hardware stores, too,
have jars, lids, funnels, jar lifters, cheese cloth, pectin, or is that
not what you're asking about?

When we lived in Lafayette (between Oakland and Walnut Creek), I got
all of my supplies from Safeway. People would stop me in the grocery
store and tell me about their grandmothers' canning.

My local WalMart has moved all the canning stuff to the front of the
store. They seem to be out of powdered pectin and I think I cleaned
them out of liquid. My favorite grocery store keeps canning supplies
year around, the jars right at the front. I was amazed the first time
I went in after we moved here to see the jars in December.

We were traveling last weekend and I stopped at WalMart and used up
all of my 2006 coupons. They also had 2-box packs of Certo for $5.64
or $2.82 per box. I only bought 1 pack since I have several Ball
liquid boxes and the dating on them is not very long.

OT: In addition to finding a deal on pectin, on the drive down we
passed a farm store and decided to see if they had the pesticide we
were looking for. Yes, 1/2 price. Bought 2. Then we came by the
Hampton Inn at our destination and decided to see if there was a room
available. We had reservation 20 miles away. Yes. The Inn is about
1 mile from the gathering. I was waiting for everything else to go
wrong, but the week end was very pleasant.

Do you have an Ace Hardware nearby? Most Ace Hardware stores stock a fair
amount of canning supplies year-round. In the dead of winter, Ace is the
only place I can find jars locally. (Pectin is available year-round in most
groceries. If it's not by the baking supplies, try by the Jell-o.)

Lacking an Ace Hardware, try another large hardware store.

Some canning supplies I had to buy online. (Clearjel, for example.)

I get my canning supplies at either Winco
(http://www.wincofoods.com/locations.htm) or Bi-Mart
(http://www.bimart.com/locations.aspx but not in your area). Both carry
stuff year around. Apparently some Big Lots (http://www.biglots.com/)
also carry canning supplies. Mine does not.

I found ClearJel at Cash and Carry (Smart and Final in California -
same store) last weekend. It was in a 25 pound bag. You might be able
to split this with a friend. They are a "wholesale" grocery but don't
require a membership and you don't have to buy for resale. It has GREAT
prices on lots of stuff.

We were able to order a jelly strainer from ACE website delivered to
our local store (no charge for shipping). Delivery was made in 24
hours.

Thanks to everyone. My wife can readily fine all of the basic
supplies. She wants to browse for tools etc.

Her food mill, inherited from her mother, finally broke. The ones she
sees on the net are a bit expensive. She just wants to see what is
available handle it and kick tires.
