The book begins with a discussion of clays -- their origin,
composition, and types. Following this are two chapters that briefly
survey the ten-thousand-year history of work in clay and provide a
context for viewing the contemporary ceramic pieces that illustrate
other chapters. The next two chapters cover, respectively,
hand-building and wheel techniques, with step-by-step photos to
illustrate each process. A general chapter on decorating and glazing
techniques shows the complete range of possibilities, from simple
dip-glazing to complex figural work combining many methods, followed
by two detailed chapters on glaze formulation and glaze calculations
and chemicals. Because the ultimate firing is so crucial to any
ceramic work, I devote an extensive chapter to contemporary kilns,
kiln materials, kiln construction, and the various processes for
oxidations, reduction, salt-glaze, and raku firings. The book
concludes with an analysis of the role played by the professional
potter, whether in the classroom, the studio, or industry. There are
also several appendices of practical and technical infomration and a
bibliography and glossary of ceramic terms.
