O.T. Acceptable Bigotry? WAS I'm a Southerner Now
When I saw the subject line of the original thread, I expected that someone would probably end up bashing southerners. In this NG, which is relatively politically correct, I really didn't expect so many of the posters to do it, though. Primarily, of course, the slams were related to the southern dialect, but dental hygiene placed at number two, with inbreeding making a showing, and a few others popping up as well. None of these are anything new, they've been fostered by the entertainment media for many years, but that is simply a reflection of the widespread beliefs of non-southerners. Let's look at some of these assumptions. "The southern dialect is improper english, and indicates laziness, slowness of thought, and ignorance." Right. What does the Boston dialect indicate? The Minnesota dialect? How about Brooklyn? It's just a regional dialect, and in fact there are at least two different ones, called tidewater and piedmont southern, respectively. It doesn't indicate a blessed thing except where the speaker grew up. It should also be noted that any American who believes that they speak "proper" english is most likely to be referring to the General American used by newscasters. "Proper" english doesn't even exist in England. The language has fragmented into literally thousands of regional dialects as it evolved. I'm a native Alabamian, but I use a General American dialect. Why? The use of General American keeps opportunities from being closed to me by bigoted fools. I realized that as a kid, and took steps. Why don't all southerners simply adopt a different dialect? Some, like some people everywhere, are ignorant and don't know that they're discriminated against. Most, unlike me, are too proud to knuckle under to bigots. I'm not proud of using a different dialect. I did it out of cowardice when I was young. "They're all married to their sisters." Oh, please. For the record, incest does take place in the south. It also takes place in every other inhabited region of the planet, specifically including within a ten kilometer radius of you, the reader, wherever you may be. Is the incidence higher in the south? I have no earthly way of knowing, nor does anyone else. In the absence of any hard data, I'm guessing it's pretty uniform in distribution. "Toothless! They're all toothless!" In the past, there was some basis for this one. Dentistry, like all medical advances, originates in large population centers, and then slowly migrates out into the poorer rural areas. Forty years ago, a native of, say, Chicago, would have been accustomed to seeing people who enjoyed good dental care. If that person travelled to the rural south, they might have been shocked to discover that many people had serious dental problems. When a visit to the dentist entails a two day trip and a weeks salary, not very many such visits take place. I assure you, gentle reader, that things have improved. Roads have been improved, the population has swelled, and now just about any small town has at least one busy dental practice. It is only in the last twenty to thirty years that the south has finally recovered from the aftermath of the civil war. I'm referring to what is called the Reconstruction, and is described to schoolchildren as something resembling the Marshall Plan after WWII. That's a neat bit of revisionism. It more closely resembled forty years of government sanctioned economic rape and plunder. It's been a long road, and the southern states are still among the poorest in the US, but the culture is finally starting to become homogeneous across the country. One of the last obstacles remaining to that recovery is the bigotry against southerners. I ask you to take a look around in your area. Look for rednecks. I bet you can find them in Oregon, Maine, California, just about anywhere. If you can't find any of your neighbors who fit some "southern" stereotypes, then I invite you to come visit me sometime. I'll make you welcome, and show you around my beloved Alabama. I bet you'll be surprised. Thanks for your time. Luke |

Many people equate being poor with being redneck or trash, which isn't always true. FWIW, some of the most gun-toting-est, junkyard jerks I have run into have been here on the west coast. But I will say that the worst we have been treated as an interracial couple, and DH as a "black" man, has been in North Carolina, Texas, and a few other southern states. There are parts of the south he won't drive through, for example. Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond were elected and re-elected because of people who shared their ideals. People in rec.guns often say idiotic things about New York, thinking everyone here's a carbon copy of Hillary Clinton. But, if you were blindfolded and driven to quite a few rural places here, you'd swear you were in (fill in name of the most out of the way Podunk in your imagination). Quite a few yahoos here have Confederate flag decals on their car windows, and they were born HERE. I once heard that the Klan was active around Broome County (which contains the city of Binghamton), but I dismissed it as rumor. But, returning from a Boy Scout trip to Pennsylvania, we were each told to pair up with another car and stay close. My "buddy" was a black cop from Rochester. He said "We can go pretty fast on the way home, but not in Broome County". He said a white cop would easily be able to badge his way out of a traffic stop there, but a black person.....not a good idea, even if he's a cop. He knew people.... |

Okay, to make you feel all better: A "COLORED" joke (purportedly Ronald Reagan's favorite!): "A negro walks into a bar with his big pet parrot on his shoulder... The bartender looks over and sez, "Where did you get him?" The bird replies, "Africa!" ----- A JEWISH joke: Q: Why do Jews have such big noses? A: Because air is FREE... ----- A *** joke: "There was this man who walked into a bar and says to the bartender, "10 shots of whiskey....". The bartender asks, "What's the matter?" The man says, "I found out my brother is *** and marrying my best friend." The next day the same man comes in and orders 12 shots of whiskey. The bartenders asks, "What's wrong this time?" The man says, "I found out that my son is ***." The next day the same man comes in the bar and orders 15 shots of whiskey. Then the bartender asks, "Doesn't anyone in your family like women?" The man looks up and says, "Apprently my wife does." </> |

For the same reason, I presume, that it's "okay" to poke fun at men, blondes and other groups that don't have the ACLU standing behind them. I doubt that anyone here on this group would actually move to the south and start proclaiming some of the joking that was posted here as The Truth. (Although I am serious that going to a bar and singing "Marching Thru Georgia" could probably get you seriously injured at worst, escorted out of the premises at best.) I'm not a native Southerner, obviously, but I come from a state that has been the butt of jokes in the Midwest for ages - Indiana. And while it's okay for *me* to tell jokes about Indiana, there's a line that I don't want other people to cross. After less than a week here, however, I've already encountered 2nd hand some of the bigotry that Luke is protesting against. I had a job interview Tuesday (for a job in my original field, yay!). While interviewing, Glenn was telling me he'd been evaluating the software that I (or whoever he hires, but I'm thinking positive here!) hires...and that he was completely turned off and insulted by the salesman for Number One Provider in the Country, because Salesman for NOPitC treated him...well, since Glenn seemed to be grasping for words that didn't involve profanity, I provided him with my version: "He was condescending and patronizing. And I can tell you why." (I've dealt with NOPitC for years, and their sales people only seem to have manners when your company is on the Fortune 100 *and* your corporate address is in the Northeast. Considering they're headquartered in Dublin, OH and are *not* on the Fortune 100, I find this funny.) The thing is, NOPitC really is the best software package out there...but I can guarantee that Glenn is not going to buy it just because of that salesman. And it's not going to hurt Glenn's project a bit that he's not buying the "Jaguar" software. And Glenn doesn't *have* a Southern accent - he's from Cleveland, for heaven sakes. But Corporate is in South Carolina, so obviously Salesman from NOPitC "knows" that everyone employed there is mentally deficient. I'm not sure why I'm rambling about this, except I understand Luke taking offense. It's funny when Jeff Foxworthy or Bill Engvald or Ron White make jokes about the South - because it's okay to make fun of yourself - and they're so obviously joking. But it can easily stop being funny when other people keep piling it on and give the impression that they believe what they're saying. Lisa Ann |

Of them all, Tennessee is my favorite by far. I remember my husband and I were staying at a hotel in San Francisco. Some dude asked us where we were from--and we said Tennessee. He then immediately started talking in an idiotic mock-Southern drawl--started babbling about RC and Moonpies, for Christ's sake. God, what a bigoted horse's ass. For the record--I think the most bigoted/racist/intolerant place I've ever lived has NOT been in the Sunny South--it has been Chicago.--r3 |

That was Lisa Ann, not me. I do feel bad when people tell me I talk like the morons in the movie, "Fargo," Perhaps the speech in that movie was intended as a caricature or something, and they just grossly exaggerated word pronunciations. I dunno, but I don't like that comparison at all. Carol |

I just noticed that the P in yup is silent. Well, not silent, but different. More like the first half of a B, but without the B sound. Call me on the phone and I'll say it for you. LOL! Carol |

On both sides of the fence--southern and northern--and across the yard, out west. It might be best to stick to cooking talk. ( I am a southerner AND a northerner. And I have a functioning brain so I don't make stupid generalizations based upon imagined regional character.) |
