Default Presto PowerPop popcorn maker

I recently bought one of these popcorn makers. It works great! I paid
$12.26 at Wal-Mart. Does anyone use the paper inserts called, I think,
a "concentrator"? What would happen if I didn't use it? Would it make
potato chips instead of popcorn? (Just kidding.) Is this just a scam?
Any substitutes?

Sara
