Default Dumb BBQ question, please

We used to have charcoal grills but now have a gas grill (which is good and
bad).

Can you use wood chips on a gas grill? If so, is there a trick to it?
Like maybe in a box or something? TIA

Double wrap them in foil and poke a few holes in it. Put it
on 10 minutes ahead of the food to get the smoke going.

Yeah, you can use a cast iron box. I own one, but haven't seen it
since we moved here. LOL!

I don't know if this works or not, but a neighbor suggested soaking
wood, wrapping it in foil, then throwing it in the "coals." He said
that it would smoke that way, but not burn. Attempt at your own peril
- I haven't tried it yet.

I put wood directly on the grate. Works perfect and you don't need
anything but some small chips of wood.
