Cara Cara Oranges

Anyone every heard of them? I bought them on a whim at the grocery store,
because there was a sign next to the grocer's picture saying, "You're going
to love these. I guarantee it." I thought if I don't like them I'll return
the rest. They were SO good. They were seedless and the flesh was on the
reddish orange side. So sweet. Normally, I split an orange between the
kids for breakfast, but we each wanted a whole one of our own.

Pandora, I thought it means "dear" or "beloved", as in "Caro Nome" in
Rigoletto, one being feminine and one masculine. I guess cara and
caro are different. Live and learn.

Language is interesting:

Entry Word: dear
Function: adjective
Text: 1 commanding a large price <caviar has always been among the dearest
of foods> -- see COSTLY
2 granted special treatment or attention <spared no expense when caring for
and feeding her dear little dog> -- see DARLING 1
3 having qualities that tend to make one loved <a dear friend that I would
do anything for> -- see LOVABLE

Right, but look at the first definition, which confirms your interpretation
of "cara": Costly, expensive.

If you really want an orange, and nothing else will make you happy at the

They've been around for about 4-5 years here in SoCal....Ralph's (div of
Kroger) was the first chain to sell them. Cara Cara is a blend of orange &
grapefruit from Texas. Very large & juicy.

It also has various meanings in Spanish. What makes you think it's Italian,
especially considering the history of California? :-)

Lynne,

I love the CaraCara and other pink/red oranges. The first time I tried them
was about 6 or 7 years ago when Whole Foods had a huge display of "Volcano
Oranges". I had to buy them, just because they sounded so good in the
description...it was love at first slurp.
They seem to have a much shorter season, but they are worth the wait :)

I hate to be argumentative, but this information isn't correct. Cara Cara
navels are all orange, no grapefruit and were first discovered in Venezuela
(at Hacienda Cara Cara), not Texas. From there they were brought to Florida,
then California. The color is similar to that of red grapefruit, but that
isn't because there's any grapefruit in them.

That's not argumentative - it's factual. Thank you. It should shut down the

These weren't large. I'd say they were small for an orange. Bigger than a
tangerine. I thought they had a light grapefruit like taste mixed in with
orange, but wasn't going to say a word. As the kids don't like grapefruits.

These weren't anything like blood oranges. They were more pink in color and
had a completely different taste.

ROFL, you know, I don't think I'll take those odds! I only gamble when I'm
sure I'll win ;-)
I only know this stuff because when the first place I got them didn't carry
them anymore, I had an urgent need to learn more :) When I get a craving,
it's serious business!

Blood oranges are wonderful, in their own right, but they aren't the same as
Red (or Pink) navels, which is what Cara Cara oranges are.

Can I ask, though, have you ever tried blood orange juice (fresh of course
:) ) on your haricot vertes??

kimberly...giggling, but only half joking...it really is delicious!

The real blood oranges are different. Cara Caras are a type of red
navel.

Oh! Thank you Michaela! Now I knowwhat are you talking about!! We cal them
"Arance sanguinelle" because their juice is red like blood (blood= sangue in
italian). And they are more expensive then the normal ones.
