Tonight's meal:

Baked potatoes, topped with steramed broccoli and a cheese sauce that
tastes like fondue - it's a white sauce with all the cheese stubs from
NYE: fontina, emmenthaler, jarlsberg, and havarti

Mushrooms simmered in red wine

Sauteed baby spinach with garlic

Carrot souffle from the gourmet store

Yummy, not too rich or decadent, but delicious!

For dessert - strawberries dipped in sour cream with brown sugar

Here, roast chicken -- trying an "organic free range" bird, first time
for this brand. Rubbed with garlic and lime juice, more garlic and a
lime half in the cavity. Probably will overcook it because I'll be
watching the football game. Mashed potatoes and steamed beet greens,
finished with butter and lemon juice.

Sounds good. Over here it's a soup with onions, celery and peppers
cooked in olive oil, white beans, two cans of diced tomatoes, some
chicken broth, a bay leaf and thyme and some frozen roasted corn, we'll
eat it with some semolina bread.

Boy, that sounds great. I made pork chops, some tomato/cucumber
salad and leftover roasted garlic mashed potatoes. So easy but
so good.

Easy is my theme tonight, too. A tomato sandwich, a banana, and a few
bites of some really good salami secchi that James picked up at the
market.

Costco supper:

Dinner tonight -- almost everything from Costco, including my clothes,
sheepskin boots, earrings, watch etc. - tee hee.
Appetizer: (new) Spanakopita triangles (baked in oven)
Mahi Mahi (baked in oven - olive oil, salt and pepper)
Red Potatoes (baked in oven)
Mixed Salad greens - the good kind - w/Spanish Olive Oil & Lemon & Balsamic
Avocado with the Mixed Salad Greens
Ruffino wine
(The only thing that wasn't from Costco was Goya canned cannelli beans) -
I'm still having beans and oatmeal everyday; starting on my second month
now -- and starting into my second month of no Prilosec (GERD meds).

I bet she made her own.

We having grilled flattened chicken breast with Greek seasoning (a sprinkle-
on), grilled summer squash, and steamed rice. I'm only *thinking* about
dessert. <g>

Sorry Nancy, I missed that. I knew that Dee had been experimenting with
phyllo dough.

I am having that yum-yum-yum reaction from eating *exactly* what I was
in the mood for (a tomato sandwich) and wondering if it will be
overkill to have another.

dough.

Would that I had made my own. DH saw these and said that HE would eat them
if I didn't want them because as I recall there might be an ingredient in
them that I had an objection to. (...to which I had an objection.) After
eating my own spanakopita (once) and being hard on myself, I think mine had
a better flavor. The spinach inside was good, but the cheese was pretty
flavorless and there was no hint of green onion nor nutmeg which I believe
is one of the spices, tho faint. Pretty mild tasting. Would I buy again --
probably not. But I would not discourage others from trying them.

Thank you Ophelia -- for your concern.

I'm having beans and oatmeal EVERYDAY for lowering the cholesterol, as
someone on this ng said they lowered their cholesterol 30 and 50 points.
I'm giving it a long-haul try. When I told my doctor I was going to do
this, he said, "Save some room for something else." I can only think what
was going on in his mind when I told him this. For darned sure, oatmeal and
beans (along with other food) has never given me symptoms like some meds
have.

I'm using multi-enzymes for digestion of food - probably since I was popping
the Prilosec, I was probably not getting enough digestion for proper
nutrition. And I was probably perpetuating the problem by continuing to
take the Prilosec, or Tums or anything like that. These little purple pills
can be bad for you, so I've tried before to get off them, but couldn't. Now
instead of popping a Tums if I have a hint of GERD, I take DGL (3%
Glycrrhizinic Acid which is a Deglyccrhizinated Licorice) which pretty much
does the trick. I'm having less intensive GERD now and I believe the
occurrence is slowly decreasing.

You see I'm open to suggestion from this ng, as someone suggested that I
take some probiotics as I had a hideous reaction to an antibiotic. And they
suggested I eat yogurt everyday. I did eat yogurt, but I became more
consistent about it - adding it to my morning oatmeal.

I was on too many meds and I believe they were making me sick. Now I'm down
to only a 'water-pill' diuretic of the lowest mg. - 12.5 mg to control my
bloodpressure. Actually I must be a lot better than I have been for months.

Haven't cut out the wine - same as always, a little at dinner a few times a
week and some bittersweet chocolate after dinner. So life is still sweet.

And I hope if any others have GERD I have been helpful. Some people never
get it; for instance my f-i-l & m-i-l ate what I consider junky food and
fried food all his lives without ever a Tums or a bit of indigestion. DH
and I would really suffer after a meal with them.

Somehow I don't think it is OT, as we are what we eat; and what we eat
sometimes makes us more than a bit uncomfortable.

Thanks for asking, Ophelia. Thanks a whole lot.

Happy New Year, Ophelia.
GERD is a reflux ailment, or severe case of heartburn which could be
damaging to the esophagus over time.

For years I have wondered about this phenomenon. I tend to think of
medical science as more like, well, science than folklore. Why some

valid and applicable to another person baffles me. -aem

Because human bodies don't respond as predictably as the scientific
method requires. After going through some actual medical crises, we
found out that the doctors didn't know as much as we'd like and were
often at a loss. There are times when something won't cause harm and
might help, and even the doctors weren't against that.
