Default Is Food Network on the decline?

After seeing Robin "Crazy Eyes" Miller's new show and ads for Ray-Ray's
numerous shows, it occurred to me that FN has been slowly replacing their
real chefs with hacks who have no clue in a kitchen and shows which
have little, if anything, to do with cooking. Has anyone else noticed
this?

Yep, my husband has been grumping about the same thing and has quit
watching it because of exactly that reason. It's too bad, it used to
be really fun to watch.

They wouldn't being doing this unless demographics told them that's
what middle America wants. Go try to account for Taste (which was a FN
show I miss).

I'm a former Food Network watcher but I checked in recently to watch
an Alton Brown Good Eats. He's always been over the top with the
theme shows and comedy bits but always had some good solid info in
each show. Unfortunately, it appears there's more ham than beef now.

The first show I ever saw on FN was Taste. I fell in loe. He was talking about
tuna in that episode. I really really miss that show.

I don't have TV anymore (or, more specifically, I have a tv and I use it to
watch dvd's and tapes, but I turned off all reception so just movies not 'TV"
proper) and I do miss FN and the various Discovery Channels (though if FN is
as bad as it sounds, maybe I'm okay with it).

Also, can I just say...I really really hate Emeril. I do. I hated him when I
had TV, I hate him now that he has some bizarre line of organic baby roma
tomatoes at my grocery store. No real reason, it's just an irrational hate.

Funny you should mention Emeril. Last week I was visiting my dad in
Florida and we had Emeril on while we were playing cards. I think it
was last Tuesday, November 22. My dad mentioned that he read
somewhere Emeril always drinks before he goes on the air and, after
watching that particular episode, I don't doubt it!!!! He had some lady
singer on--maybe he was trying to impress her. I won't watch him
again. Alton Brown, however, I luv.

Look who we elected as president. Half the country thinks it's just fine
that after several thousand repetitions, he still cannot pronounce "nuclear"
or utter a complex sentence without a script, and probably an animal
training collar under his dress shirt. So, it should come as no surprise
that Emeril's recipes are probably considered way too complicated for some
listeners. He'll be gone next.

than you want too?

There must be SOME words which upset you if mispronounced. How much do you
let your kids get away with in this regard? Or, do you believe the bullshit
about how "all languages evolve", which is really an excuse for screwing
them up?

Yes yes and yes.

FoodTV is just so much crap now. I rarely watch it anymore unless Alton
Brown is on. I have no use for the endless stream of candy shows, the
proliferation of shows about the snack food business. OK, so now I know how
Fritos are made. Like I care. I am also rather tired of the celebrity
kitchen shows like Wolfgang Puck cooking for Dr. Phil's dinner party. It
seems to lean quite heavily towards a food version of Lifestyles of the Rich
and Famous. And then we have that De Laurentis chick and her champagne
parties for millionaires. I watched the Two Hot Tamales on Iron Chef USA
and it brought back memories of the good old days when FoodTV was about all
I watched in the evenings.

We still have the occasional show from the old days like Mario Batalia and
his show. It won't last much longer as those slots are becoming very much
the rarity. Plus he is often on very late at night too which shows what the
network thinks of his show. Yet that irritating harpy Rachel Ray gets
massive coverage. 40 dollars a day is a joke. One, I could do it for 20.
2 who wants to watch her stuffing her face and making endless orgasmic
expressions about the quality of the food. When I think orgasms, I don't
think food or Rachel Ray. OK, I thought she was cute once now she annoys me
no end. And her 30 minute meals - sure if you either have a crew prepping
the ingredients for you or if you open a bunch of cans and call that dinner.
And her food if you ate it would probably kill you. She once made a canned
chili dish with hotdogs and cheese and butter soaked bread and called it
healthy - that meal was listed as like 1000 calories and 65 grams of fat -
per serving! It's a joke.

I really, really miss the old shows.

And also a relative question. The Scripps Company owns the Food
Network, along with the DIY Network, Fine LIving, Great American
Country (GAC), and House and Garden TV network. My bet is (and I
haven't tried to research it) that of all their networks, the Food
Network brings in the most cabbage. -aem

I don't watch FN that regularly anymore, but I do use the website, and am
genuinely surprised that Sara Moulton is no longer there. At least, that's
the impression I'm getting from Luciaphile's post. And Ming...I thought he
was relegated to the wee hours, but he's just not on at all?

The only show I still truly love is Good Eats, the style just suits me.
Even though I have little interest in regular cooking shows, I think that
there are many more people who would rather have those back, and if it
means getting rid of the endless cooking contest shows (sometimes they're
interesting, often they're not worth it), reality shows, and the "eat the
streets" type shows I'm all for more variety in cooking shows. I was
excited this weekend when I saw a tiny bit of "Good Deal" that started
early on my saved recording of "Good Eats" because I think a true
budget-conscious show that included a breakdown of costs would be
fantastic...but from reading the forum I see this is not really the case.

As for the "how do they make it" shows...I think they can be OK if they
were occasional SPECIALS...but they are on so often!

A gingerbread competition is on right now! I watch few enough
that they are interesting for me. I think the other one I've seen is
the wedding cake one.

Let's fact it, reality shows are cheaper to produce and "somebody"
watches them or else they would cease to exist.

Not sure what you mean... a behind the scenes type show - like you get
as behind the scenes on DVD movies? Obviously I watch less than you
do.

I read it as the "how do the manufacturer this product" shows like
Unwrapped.
