I bought a small cast iron footed pot-bellied container with lid and
wire handle at a yard sale and have no idea what it would be called. Kind of reminescent of a honey pot. Any help identifying this would be appreciated....and does it carry any value? Thanks for your assistance. Grand Bay Rose |

It is less than 1 quart, has a lid, and 3 legs. Looks like a witches
cauldron with a lid....has a handle for hanging over a campfire, but is too small to actually do much cooking in. I have dutch ovens and this does not resemble them. No markings that I can see. This is really cute...I just don't know what it is. Thanks |

Its a little larger than that, about 4.5 inches across and 5.3 inches
high counting legs and lid. Holds about 3 cups. Sounds like it could be a soup or stew kettle tho. Tried tp find a pic of one but no luck yet. Thanks for your input. |

I think the term "spider" means the contraption from which you can hang the pot. It's usually three "legs" (even tho spiders have more) that meet at the top with a chain hanging from the top???? Am I wrong about this??? I don't have a picture Sharon |

I think any reactive cookware is lousy for braising/stewing. Cast iron cookware is but a baby step out of the stone age, in fact stoneware/earthenware is still the best one can choose for braising/stewing. Cast iron dutch *ovens* were meant for dry baking, not wet cooking. These days folks toss around "dutch oven" as do major cookware manufacturers to mean any large covered pot. Not. Sheldon |

What volume would it hold? How thick/heavy is it? Is it decorated? Any sign that it has been in or over a fire? Would you say thet the wire handle is original or a replacement for something more sophisticated? David |

Holds about 3 cups, quite heavy for its size. the pot bellied portion
has raised rings around it but no other decorations. The lid has an indentation or lip around the outside but it (the lid) is not raised very much....just a small curve to it and it has a little rectangular narrow handle to it. I would say that the wire handle is original and it doesn't appear to have been used over a fire. Beats me. |

Sounds like it might be a variation of a potjie pot - often used in South
Africa. They sell these in very small sizes sometimes. See link below: http://www.thecellarstore.com/potjiepot.html If the legs are short, check out the picture on the right about half-way down the page at: http://www.thecellarstore.com/flatpotsos.html Or try: http://www.africantradingco.com/castironpots.html Good picture of the much bigger version in typical use at: http://www.biltong2u.co.uk/potjepots.htm GoodXRolln > wrote in message oups.com... > I bought a small cast iron footed pot-bellied container with lid and > wire handle at a yard sale and have no idea what it would be called. > Kind of reminescent of a honey pot.
