Glad to hear it. I'd be wary of getting on anything resembling a tube
train, but thats how they win though isn't it. I imagine there will be
a lot more cycle commuters tomorrow..

They've confirmed 33 dead, not including the bus. It seems unreal.
It's awful for those in London, at times like this I'm glad I live in a
small town, but you never know where they'll strike. It's not like there is
any sense to their thinking!

I agree Stan. The London explosions are obviously a planned retaliation.
Violence almost always begets violence, most particularly when the heads of
state of different countries are at odds with one another.

Cheers Chris.

It's looking uglier by the minute - ~300 hundred + injured, 50 - 100 dead, a
lot of walking wounded on top of that.

Ugh!

I was on the tube behind the one that exploded at Aldgate east. Just a
normal day with normal delays, or so I thought. I'd just got on the
district line at Mile End, everything was running normally. at 08:50
the train stopped at Whitechapel and after about 5 mins an announcement
about a power failure was made. I just got off and walked the 10 mins
to my office which is near Aldgate East. The first I heard of it was
when my friends and family started to call to see if I was OK. As I sit
here now and watch events unfold I just thank my lucky stars that I
wasn't a fraction earlier on the tube this morning.

There is no sense to murder.

Let us not forget, these are not the only people to be committing murder in
the world, in the name of what they believe in.

I too am thankful not to be in the thick of this.

Cheers,

Shaun.

Wow. Stay safe everyone. Truly a sad day. As much as I hope it won't

suffering.

another massive tragedy in the name of politics and religion, very sad. My
prayers are for peace and an end to violence.

These posting are reminiscent to 9/11 - I used to be on a list serve and one
of the members worked about 2 blocks from ground zero. We were getting
minute by minute reports from her, then a deadly silence for a few hours
while she walked home, and then more reports on what that was like.

Shaune, what's up with alt. skunks anyway?

Casualties of war -- while tragic, maddening and often even senseless -- can
hardly be equated with the deliberate targeting of innocents by terrorists.

Indeed, but it doesn't stop us from hoping otherwise, and living our lives
in a peace promoting way, does it?

Boy, Shaun, not to me. The very same cowards who blow up crowded busses and
trains also run their operations from residential areas, hospitals and even
mosques to insure civilian losses on THEIR side, too.

Hey Penny - I am most *definately* with you here! Violence begets violence -
we have a long history proving just that...

It's crazy isn't it?!? <Sigh!>

Kath (before we met) had been in NYC just before that happened, they'd
gotten on one of the last flights out...

And I may well be one of them. I'll check the trains tomorrow morning,
but if they're as bad as I think they're going to be, then I'll be
hopping on the bike.

I've been meaning to do it for a while, but I've been waiting for my
ankle to properly heal up.

Latest word from round here is that people are queueing over London
Bridge to get in to the station. It could be a long night...

Interesting how this happens just as Bush wants to talk security and
the others want to push Kyoto...wonder what the motivation was to hit
Britain at this time, if it was a willful act and not a gas explosion.
At any rate, I'm leaning towards thinking it had nothing to do with the
G-8.

I am wary of claims at this point and hope the British security people
are also careful before jumping the gun (as it were).

I've rather strangely found myself singing a bit of Noel Coward to
myself most of the day. Seems as rational a response as any, I guess.

RobtE

"London Pride"
In our city darkened now, street and square and crescent,
We can feel our living past in our shadowed present,
Ghosts beside our starlit Thames
Who lived and loved and died
Keep throughout the ages London Pride.

London Pride has been handed down to us.
London Pride is a flower that's free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it for ever will be.
Grey city
Stubbornly implanted,
Taken so for granted
For a thousand years.
Stay, city,
Smokily enchanted,
Cradle of our memories and hopes and fears.
Every Blitz
Your resistance
Toughening,
From the Ritz
To the Anchor and Crown,
Nothing ever could override
The pride of London Town.

Nope, I have to disagree in regard to the Israelis, Stanley. The Israelis
have delivered CRUSHING blows to those who promulgate suicide bombings -
which is why the incidence of suicide bombings in Israel is WAY down...

I went out in New York City today. On the way home, two police
officers boarded the bus into which I had just stepped. While one
stayed in front of the vehicle and kept all the passenger in his
sight, the other one walked through the bus to look at the people in
it and look for anything suspicious. The whole procedure took a
minute or less, but it gave one much food for thought.

When I got home, I saw on CNN that this is something that is going on
today in many cities in the USA, that security agents or public
servants (police, fire) are randomly checking out public
transportation. It is the first time since 9/11 that I sorely feel
that we and our allies are at war with an enemy against whom we have
little power to really defend ourselves and whom we possibly not even
know.

This is a sad day here and I can barely fathom how terrible this day
is in the United Kingdom. My heart goes out to all who are suffering
and I wish I could offer some words of solace. Sadly, those words
have yet to be coined. MS

Easy for anyone with half a brain to figger out, sf - they're stinkin'
*Muslims*...Islam fosters a lifestyle that embraces *death*, not life.

Because of Muslims, this planet is fighting it's very own _War Of The
Worlds_...no alien invasion could be worse than what the sneeky Muslims are
doing to destroy the planet.

the Israelis have become all that they abhorred.

*snort* funny, I thought it was America that was destroying the planet.

When words fail, a moment of silence is appreciated.

Let your heart go out to those who have lost loved ones on this day.

((and, if you're christian and not heathen like me, make sure your love
goes out to both guilty and innocent alike))

To a horrendous degree, yes it is. =o( It's lousy-stinking AWFUL!

To all English RFC-ers, and especially to those living in London, I
hope you and your family and friends are safe, and anyone you're
worried about will soon make contact to tell you they're all right.
We're with you, England, as you were with us on 9/11

I watched in horror early this morning but didn't post because I was on my
way to a medical appointment and beyond. What a senseless loss of life and
limb and what cowards they are. I also post on a UK newsgroup and was
amazed by several responses: "We don't live in London so why should we
care?". Are people really that blasé at home anymore?

Were you starting from the main Google page, or from news.google.com?

Usually, news.google.com has at the very bottom of the page a listing
of all editions. English-language for US, Canada, UK, Australia,
India, and New Zealand. French for France, Switzerland, and Canada.
Italian for Italy and Switzerland. German for Germany, Austria, and
Switzerland. Spanish for Spain and several Latin American countries.
Chinese for China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan (and I wish I was able to
compare those three, to see which one left out what news...) Japanese.
Korean.

But you won't see that choice on the Google home page.

Sure it has. There were several species of intelligent dinosaur. One
of them tried to take over the world.

They're not around anymore. Their opponents were victorious!

Turned out ok. Everyone tried to get out of London at 5 (hmm,
post-terrorist attack, let's see if we can form the largest crowd
possible(?)), so by the time I got out the pub everywhere was pretty much
deserted.

GAS EXPLOSION?!? /FOUR/ of 'em?!? (Including one on a friggin' BUS?!?)

Chances are there's some video. We'll know who's responsible soon.
