Default Carbmeat vs. Surimi

Hi!

What is the difference between crabmeat and surimi? Difference in
taste, difference in price.

Crabmeat tastes like crab meat. Surimi tastes like crab-flavored
rubber. (Or lobster-flavored rubber if it's being passed off as
lobster.) Crabmeat is more expensive, as is customary when comparing
real and imitation whatever.

Surimi is made from white-fleshed fish and is intended as a substitute for
crab. It varies a lot. The best can be tasty although you would never
mistake it for actual crab. The lesser stuff is awful.

Peter, can you recommend a brand? Although I agree with 'Melba's Jammin'
that it's not much like crab, I kinda like the stuff --I think of it as Spam
of the sea.

Thanks,

Susan

I kinda like it too, didn't know it was called Surimi either for that
matter. I make "Crab" cakes out of it usually or put in a salad. Tasty
, Crab definitely tastes different to me. Not BETTEr just different.
Spam I can only stomach when camping, much rather have McGarry's
Sausage(Dunno if ya can get it in the US tho, never found anyplace) or
Bacon, even sausage Patty's anything but Spam ;-)

If ANYONE knows a source to buy mcGarry's Sausage in the NYC area
PLEASE let me know, I only get up to Canada about once a year.

Then Gorge myself on McGarry's, Mohawk Meat Pies from Dustins in
Kahnawake(near Montreal) and Fish and chips made from Pickerel YUMMY!
maybe even Poutine from Hamburger Heaven

O:nen ki' wahi' Bye for now

I buy the fake crab from time to time. I generally cut it into diagonal
slices, put some butter and garlic powder on it, and nuke it until it's
heated through. Fast, easy, and not all that bad. That combo is nice on
pasta, too.

Gotta disagree with you there. Real crab meat has such a delicate,
slightly sweet flavor. The fake stuff tastes sorta like crab, but doesn't
have the subtlety of the real thing.

Carol, who much prefers crab legs to lobster.

The fake crab is ok in salads (cobb style or pasta style) where a lot
of the taste & texture is muted by other things like pasta and salad
dressing etc...

Real Crab tastes better, the Fake crab tastes of artifical crab
flavouring, cause it is.

As in all things in life the real thing is better and you pay for what
you get.

No, sorry. I have had good surimi in restaurants and as a guest but have
never bought and used it myself.
