That's strange, Carol. I saw the original post just fine. Maybe it's
something between them and you, like your ISP. Or, maybe there was
just a "burp". My speed varies between 200k and 1.8 mbs from hour to
hour, with absolutely no explanation. I even put a DSL splitter at
the NID and ran dedicated cat-5e for the DSL connection and it's
exactly the same. I lose my connection upwards of 30 or so times a
day somedays, and then go 5 or 6 days just fine. The internet, the
connection technology of your choice, and everything else involved
seems to be a combination of witchcraft, smoke, and mirrors as far as
I can determine.

Witchcraft occasionally, smoke definitely (it is used as an indication
that some piece of equipment needs replacing), only the mirrors I can't
place.

Plenty reasons for speed to vary, but I would have a chat to that ISP,
either their upstream connectivity is not up to scratch, or they have
some funny ideas on bandwith shaping. Or maybe there's other traffic on
getting in the way (we had a case of that here this week, internet
connectivity slows down to a crawl, turned out to be some machine in
Czechoslowakia trying to open 20 parallel connections to one of the
boxen here, chewing up all bandwith in the process. Had to block it on
the firewall for an hour before it eventually gave up).

Damsel's original post made it here too, so in this case I'd guess some
news server (or spam filter) near her is being too clever for it's own good.

That could very well be. If it's not individual.net, it must be my ISP.

I've been googling the follow-up posts, and want to say thanks to everyone
who responded.

That was my first thought, but I've looked through my killfiles a zillion

He was big into computers back in the Commodore 64 days. He used several
BBS's. One of them crashed every time he logged on. Never happened with
other users. That's how he got his nick. He's been using it for a
loooooong time!

Thanks, Denise. It really didn't bother me. Some people are just socially
impaired. Probably wasn't breast fed as an infant or something.

When I told Crash that he'd been called a long-haired hippy freak, he
smiled and said, "Then my work here is done." LOL! By the way, I call him
a long-haired hippy-type freak all the time, so it wasn't an insult,
despite the moron's best efforts. Crash wants to grow his hair down to his
waist, like he did in his 20's.

Might have just been a "glitch", Carol. I posted a thing about prawn
salad the other day, and it never showed up either! (and we are on a
totally different ISP). Maybe they thought I said "p0rn-salad" or
something

Yea, the OP was 'spot on' there, but I agree, it's OK to be a long

I'd say this is extremely far-fetched. You can easily check this by
just trying it with another newsreader (or even the same one), with no
filtering enabled.

ObFood: Zuppa alla Valdostana, a "hearty dish that is halfway between a
soup and a casserole", from _The Food of North Italy_ by Luigi
Veronelli. "Don't make it with canned broth - it just won't have the
same flavour". BTW, I'm sure that "rock salt" called for in the recipe
is a mistranslation and coarse (kosher) salt is called for. In any
case, I don't think the type of salt matters very much in the recipe.

Victor

Zuppa alla Valdostana

3 lb (1 1/2 kg) beef shoulder
8 cups (2 litres) cold water
1 medium carrot, roughly cubed
1 medium onion, unpeeled and cut into 8 equal pieces
1 small leek, cut in half
1 rib celery, leaf and stems cut in half
4 black peppercorns
1 tablespoon rock salt
1/2 head of Savoy cabbage, about 1 2/3 lb (800 g)
2 tablespoons butter
1 lb (500 g) packet thinly sliced black bread
3 cups (375 g) thinly sliced Fontina Valdostana cheese
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Place beef in a large saucepan with the cold water, adding more water if
necessary so that beef is just covered. Place over high heat and bring
to a boil, carefully skimming foam. Add carrot onion, leek, celery,
black peppercorns, and rock salt, return to the boil, then reduce heat
and simmer for 2 hours, skimming foam occasionally. If necessary, add a
cup or so of boiling water during this time so that meat is just covered
with liquid.

Remove from heat and skim fat from surface. Remove meat from cooking
liquid and reserve for another use. Strain broth and reserve
vegetables. Set broth aside and keep warm.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C, gas mark 4).

Break the head of cabbage down to its leaves. Bring a large saucepan of
water to a boil and add the reserved vegetables. Add the cabbage leaves
and boil until _al dente_. Remove cabbage, drain and cut into thin
strips. Arrange on a large clean dishtowel to dry. Strain cooking
liquid, discard vegetables and reserve cooking liquid for another use.

Generously butter a 13-cup (3 1/4 litre) capacity, deep casserole dish.
Arrange one-third of the bread slices on the bottom, cover with
one-third of the sliced cabbage, and then one-third of the cheese.
Repeat layers ending with a layer of cheese. Pour in 2 1/2 cups (625
ml) of the warm broth and sprinkle the top with cinnamon.

Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned on top and firm. Remove
from the oven and serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

If you'd like to do a GOOD THING with it, braid it, and check the rest
of the requirements at <locksoflove.org> Nicest thing you can do with
the last of it. (save a lock for yourself)

Of course I am, FFS! DUH! ',;~}~

You can *insist* all you like - it ain't gonna happen, heheheh...

My hair has quite a grey content these days - just wouldn't look the same
long anymore. Besides, as I said - I don't want to spend that much time
anymore looking after what is essentially, just a bunch of dead keratin!
Life is just to short for such vanities, heheheheh...

You see? This was another thing that got too much for me - all the women I
knew liked my hair more than I did, in the end, in an envious way too - I
wasn't going through all that fuss for them, no way!

I still have the hair BTW - I tied it into a tight pony before it was cut -
it is now in a memory box ina sealed plastic bag LOL! Still want it?
