Default Pressure Cookers

Well, the stoopid Revere Ware people have discontinued their
pressure cookers, and I can't get a gasket for mine. Time to
upgrade.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Mark,

I've had a Stainless Fagor Elite 6 qt for about a year, and been very
pleased. Seems to be a pretty good value as far a pressure cookers go
(about $60).

Good luck,

I've had a Presto pressure cooker I've used for the last 25 years and it
still works great. It's a nice heavy stainless model so I sometimes use just
the pot alone for other things, too.

I'm sure by now there are other fancier and more sophisticated ones around,
though.

I've used Presto for years. In fact one of mine was my grandmothers
and has a date of 1949 on it. I can still get parts.

That's three votes for Presto from me, Katra, and Freecyclemom.

And three votes from Kelly for her Fagor Elite.

My wife bought a Presto cooker in 1961. At the time I was very upset that
she had spent around $20 for a pot of any kind to cook in. However, we still
use it and last weekend we cooked 2 racks of ribs in 35 minutes. The meat
was tender enough to cut with a fork. Best investment we ever made.

Actually, I had 5. 2 49ers, a larger one newer and 2 canners.

That's 4 more votes for Presto!

What size cooker do you have that holds 2 racks of ribs? (I know you cut
them up.) I have the 6-quart size which is just right for a good sized
roast, but I never thought to try to get ribs in there. Also, what kind of
sauce or marinade are you using to cook it?

The only kind of ribs I've made in mine is the Hawaiian Short Ribs recipe,
from the Presto recipe book. I call them my Faux Ribs. :-) I serve it on
wide egg noodles and it's pretty good. It makes for a nice, hearty
winter-time meal.

I have 2 sizes of Presto's. They just can not be beat. I think they
were rummage sale purchases years and years ago. Replacing the gaskets
every few years or so and I am rocking and rolling. I just bought a
"chicken bucket"
P cooker for $5. I see KFC in my future. Good luck

Ditto for my Mum's Presto pressure cooker. Her's Only thing is, the
rubber seal around the lid finally gave in and we could not get a spare
over here (SA) anymore. Very good make though.

Did she pitch it already or are you still looking for a seal? I thought I
saw several places on the web that sell Presto parts. None of them ship to
South Africa?

I bought a Presto electric pressure cooker back in 1965 and I've only
needed to replace the gasket once. It's still going strong.

Question for all you stainless people out there -- have you seen much
evidence of your pressure cookers being reactive? I heard that can sometimes
happen with tomatoes and such, but I've never run into the problem myself.
I've make spaghetti sauce in it before -- so when do you start noticing this
problem.

Normally I give a lot of credence to testimonials but I can't in this
case -- I've never run into the problem where portions of my meat or
vegetables were more or less cooked due to uneven heat distribution. I just
don't think that's much of a factor when you're cooking foods under high
pressure, with short average cooking times of a half hour or so. Everything
seems to cook perfectly when I follow recipe directions. The ramifications
of not following directions are just too great -- like blowing yourself up,
for example. ;-)

Think she still has it somewhere, but we tried about a year ago to get
the seal. We trekked around to all the factory shops and they had Presto
parts, but not that old... Mom's is about 30 years old too. The guy
there said there was no great demand for it, so they didn't bother to
import such old model spares. Do they still make them even in the States?.

Can you find the cooker and post any identifying marks found on the bottom?
Do you still have the original manual for looking up parts numbers? Did one
of factory shops you went to tell you the model number of the cooker?

Freecyclemom posted a link at http://tinyurl.com/79veb
I entered "Pressure Cookers" for Product, and "Sealing Ring" for Name and
quite a few results were returned.

That's just one web site. There's got to be loads more.

Can't remember the model number unfortunately, we had the old seal as a
sample. The cooker is sitting in Zimbabwe. My Mom is here for a visit,
and she didn't bring it with her this time. She says she did look for
the old manual, but couldn't find it... Anyway will have a look at the
sites given anyway. She has another brand of cooker now, which I think
is local or made under license locally and that's a Tedelex. You can
usually get spares for those here. Thanks for the info, anyway. We might
get lucky.

I'll second the Fagor. Very nice pressure cooker! I also have a Jasi 6

DD found a Presto pressure cooker at a yard sale. It came with a gasket
still in the package. I brought it home to test it out since she has no
experience with pressure cookers. I best test it out!

I have one stainless, one aluminum pressure cookers, and one aluminum,
pressure canner. I haven't noticed reactivity in the the stainless one
at all. I don't make spaghetti sauce in any however, afaik, stainless
is preferred because it doesn't react with acid foods. Aluminum will
react with acidic foods. I have noticed discolouration just from the
water/vinegar solution I use in the canner.

Try goodmans.net. They have a lot of parts for items no longer made.
Lehmans.net might have the part as well.

I own a Wearever pressure cooker, a birthday present from my mother
in about 1988 or so. It cost about $80 - worth every one of her
pennies . This is one of the jiggle top ones and I have used the
bejeezus out of it for over 15 years now. The gasket is in fine
shape, and looks like it better stay that way as I, like the OP,
cannot find a replacement online! If I have to buy a new one, I would
also go with the Futura cookers from India, they have been recommended
time and again on this newsgroup by knowledgeable posters. Why mess
with success? OTOH, those new-fangled digital electric PCs look
pretty intriguing too....

To be honest no, because as I mentioned in another post, we are not
sure of the model, and I don't have access to the cooker (its been left
at home in Zimbabwe). Also, the cost of importing a seal would probably
not warrant the effort if we can't pin it down to the actual model
number. The price we pay for living out here, I am afraid. But thanks
very much for taking the time to come back to me anyway. I still think
Presto is a good make of cooker, though!
Cheers
