ROMAN GLADIATORS WERE VEGGIE

Roman gladiators were overweight vegetarians who lived on barley and
beans, according to a scientific study by the University of Vienna of the
largest gladiator graveyard discovered.

Analysis of the bones of more than 70 gladiators recently found near
Ephesus, the Roman capital of Asia Minor, puts paid to traditional
Hollywood images of macho carnivores with the physique of boxers.

Ancient Roman mosaics depict gladiators as stocky, heavy men but
historians have tended to assume this was a tribute to their macho image
rather than a literal depiction of their size.

Karl Grossschmidt, a forensic anthropologist at Vienna University, used
chemical testing on the bones to reveal that gladiators stuck to a diet of
barley and beans to bulk out.

It was a boring diet, he admitted. "They got enough of this food every day
to make them very fat and strong," he said. He concluded that they devised
the diet primarily to protect themselves from slashing wounds and damage
to nerves and blood vessels, with the layer of fat supplementing their
scant armor.

Dr Grossschmidt noticed from the bone analysis that, contrary to the
normal effects of intensive training, the gladiators put on weight before a
fight rather than lost it.

The density of the bone tissue was significantly higher than normal,
exactly what one finds in modern athletes, he said. The bone enlargement
was particularly pronounced in the feet - evidence that gladiators fought
barefoot in the slippery arena sand.

God, I love the Internet. Excellent post!

Where else can I experience the finest vegan propaganda delivered right to
my home? I do have to commend you, since I couldn't be laughing harder if
you were doing standup comedy.

Keep fighting the good fight, man. I salute you for entertaining me free of
charge. In fact, I swear to become a vegan on my deathbed just to help prove
all of you were right.

Keep up the good work and, 'til next time...

Roman gladiators ate a high carb diet, were overweight, and died young.
VEGAN propaganda?

It's one of those Atkinsians sneaking over from asdl-c, Ibetcha.

Don't be silly Gladiators were Slaves. As slaves they were fed the cheapest
food possible. Who cared if they found it boring, or even if they liked it?

If so, where did they get their vitamin B12?

Maybe, but only if being a Gladiator was a step up from
their station in free life.

No one is being silly. That's what they ate and most
Gladiators didn't volunteer, it was a draft.

I laughed because Martin called it "vegan propaganda"...
both of us know there was no choice for the vast majority of
gladiators. Sorry you couldn't understand the (black)
humor.

I'm pretty sure some people did sell themselves into slavery and become
gladiators. They could buy their way out of slavery again later, if
they had the funds.

They were a lot like today's "pro wrestlers," with a full catalogue of fake
moves designed to look riskier than they were; and they understood the etiquet
that, as with the medieval "fight to the utterance," the job entailed putting
up a good show and having one's skill evaluated afterwards--gaining the crowd's
loyalty.

Risk of injury and death was high, but so it was with similar athletes, and a
sense of honor and status conveyed with it, which seems to have been worth the
hazards.

If you don't understand that, you probably won't understand why people become
toreros either.

Of course, a gladiator would play to the crowd... but he
would also fight for his life. One of them HAD to die.

Perhaps if that was their only way to survive, however
little short a time it was. There was no other reason other
than desparation (or insanity) to sell youself into that
sort of thing.

If they were the WINNER. Most of them died.

The big difference between them iand today's athletes are
that today's athletes are paid a lot more money and they
don't anticipate dying during the game.

Actually very few of them died. They were worth too much to their
owners for that.
