You're a computer engineer, why aren't you jumping in there and fixing this problem?????????? Use that 'degree' you crow about all the time!!! |

I have most everything that's important saved on all 5 active comps here . Music , photos , software , tax returns , it's all saved on 3 desktop and 2 laptop computers . If a comp crashes and burns , I just replace/repair whatever fried , reload the OS and all the programming , and roll on . And I don't even have a computer degree of any kind ! I even have all the important updates for Win7 (XP just doesn't cut it any more , too much software will no longer run on it) saved along with the programming to install them offline . Kuthe is nothing but a whiny little bitch attention whore , I don't understand why anyone even responds to his BS . -- Snag In 1775, the British demanded we give them our guns. We shot them |

When I got a new computer in January I picked up an external hard drive to transfer and back up my files. It was about $80 for the drive, plugged it in and it went to work. It was a lot slower transferring from the old computer to the external drive than it was to transfer them from the drive to the new computer. |

That's probably why you have way more computers than you need. Also, you don't mention any offsite backup. For the same reason you just did. Personally, I see no reason to have 3 desktop and 2 laptop computers. Sounds like overkill to me. <shrug> Kuthe is stuck in an alternate universe where no one has moved past XP. The folks at that computer shop will charge him an arm and a leg to find the "missing" drive (partition) and he'll gladly pay it. I'll bet he's never heard of resetting the System Restore Point. Probably never backs up anything at all. Jill |

The problem is that the ability to read these media is disappearing. If you are able to read your thumb drive, your computer might not be able to work with your old file formats. Local storage is a dying proposition. The world has passed on magnetic and optical media but solid state is currently the safest and most reliable personal archival medium - for now. |

What do the file formats have anything to do with any of that? Even if you mean to say fileSYETEM format, you're still and idiot as the FS format is totally independent the storage medium. Just **** you and **** off. You're the guy who used to brag about his computer: My computer has SIX KEYBOARDS! You can type on all six of them at the same time! And I'm going to upgrade to 8 next week! -sw |

Doesn't explain why you never figured out how to run BACKUP on that ![]() out how to restore it. You can stop adding computer anything to your list of so called credentials. Jill |

I used Windows Live Mail for years and it was my preferred mail reader, but it was starting to act up and they had stopped supporting it. When I got my new computers I was not even able to download it for installation. |

Hard drives aren't that reliable. I had a drawer full of dead HDs. Another problem with desktop computers are the power supplies, but least people don't lose their stuff when their power supplies die. My guess is that people losing their archived junk on HD is going to be commonplace because people still use these archaic devices. Keeping your stuff on hard drives is a serious mistake. |

And you can't do even the most minimal debugging? Start in the BIOS...... Ahh, no, Just take it top the shop where they'll charge you all the paychecks you've made in the last 3 years. Yes, do that instead. Since you don't have friends that can help you. -sw |

Then they can (for a fee) try changing the on-board controller, if they can find an identical model where the medium has failed. Then they can at least tell you definitively that *your* medium has failed. You still don't have your data, but now at least you know it is truly gone. |

John's "drive" is probably a partition on the same HDD. As this is XP, maybe it's been caused by someone or something jinxing the MPT entry in the MBR. |

Window just temporarily lost its pointer to it, but everything is OK with it now. > As this is XP, maybe it's been caused by someone or something > jinxing the MPT entry in the MBR. Please define your acronyms at least once before using them. And yes, a bad USB Hub was causing my D: drive to not be visible, but it's back now! Yay! :-) John Kuthe, RN, BSN... |
