I pay an accountant to do my taxes. One was expensive so we found on cheaper. The first time there was a very small error, less than $2 but they came after me for it. I had owed more than $3000 that year, so they came after me the next year for quarterly payments. I paid $3000. The next year the accountant got me a $2700 refund. Great. The government sent me $5700. I cashed the cheque and put it into a savings account. A few months later they came after me to provide proof of $3000 income tax deducted. They reassessed me, billed me for the $3000... plus interest. It turned out the accountant had screwed up and had counted the remittance as income tax deducted. I was prepared to pay them the $3000 but I fought over the interest. I pointed out that I had paid an accountant. I had only applied for the $2700 and they sent me the other $300. I had not asked for it. They argued that I should have notified them if I had suspected an error. They evenutually relented. The year we bought the house I had applied for tax credits at the house we had just bought and the apartment we had been renting for the first three months of the year. I got audited. I had to send all my receipts in. A month or two later I got a letter from some guy in a town almost 30 miles from here with all my receipts and a note explaining that they had been sent to him with his papers. I was doubly ****ed because if there had been a problem I would have no paperwork to prove my case. I wrote to Revenue Canada to complain. The *******s denied that could have happened. |

My income is my wife´s income. Everything we own is "community property". Everything is "joint tenancy with rights of survivorship" except our wedding rings. > Filial Responsibility Laws > Almost 30 states have filial responsibility laws, meaning they require > children to cover their deceased parents´ long-term care costs, such as > nursing home or hospital bills. When my mom was in her final years, and her money and assets were nearly depleted, I expected Medicaid to cover the remaining hospital expenses, if needed. I was advised to sign nothing by a nurse at the hospital. It didn´t come to that. Both of my parents left this world not owing a penny to anyone. I´m working on doing the same. So far, so good. |

If a bat seems to need your help, avoid it. There is no rabies in Australia, but you're right about the bats. They carry a virus that's not easy to catch from them, but if you do, there's no cure. |

What bit you? > I used to be terrified of snake bite, even through there were no rattlesnakes where we lived. We moved when we were teens and there were some there, not many, but some... enough that I saw one while hiking with my dog. It was the 60s's when they were fair game, so I smashed it with a rock. I later learned that rattle bites aren't always fatal. That eased by attitude a bit.... until I learned that they are excruciatingly painful and can destroy muscles, nerves and blood vessels. I hate skunks. I lived next the the Niagara Escarpment they those *******s used to come down out of the woods into our neighbourhood every night. If you were walking at night you were almost guaranteed to run into one. My brother and a friend both got sprayed. |
