I am fed up with those guys. I pay an accountant to do my taxes. One was
expensive so we found on cheaper. The first time there was a very small
error, less than $2 but they came after me for it. I had owed more than
$3000 that year, so they came after me the next year for quarterly
payments. I paid $3000. The next year the accountant got me a $2700
refund. Great. The government sent me $5700. I cashed the cheque and
put it into a savings account. A few months later they came after me to
provide proof of $3000 income tax deducted. They reassessed me, billed
me for the $3000... plus interest.

It turned out the accountant had screwed up and had counted the
remittance as income tax deducted. I was prepared to pay them the $3000
but I fought over the interest. I pointed out that I had paid an
accountant. I had only applied for the $2700 and they sent me the other
$300. I had not asked for it. They argued that I should have notified
them if I had suspected an error. They evenutually relented.

The year we bought the house I had applied for tax credits at the house
we had just bought and the apartment we had been renting for the first
three months of the year. I got audited. I had to send all my receipts
in. A month or two later I got a letter from some guy in a town almost
30 miles from here with all my receipts and a note explaining that they
had been sent to him with his papers. I was doubly ****ed because if
there had been a problem I would have no paperwork to prove my case. I
wrote to Revenue Canada to complain. The *******s denied that could
have happened.
