Yesterday we aired our paella equipment, brought to us by my cousin
many years ago and his Spanish wife taught us how to cook a paella
with it. If the surroundings look odd it's because we have it in my
younger daughters garage which accommodates many more than the house
can. It is lined with her husbands beer can collection, heading
towards 3000 now.

You need a special cooker for that? All I see is maybe rice,
mussels and lemon wedges. blah

No sign of beer cans on the background shelf. I hope those
are (where ever they are) are empty beer cans. Who would buy
3000 beers and not drink them?

You missed the shrimp. There might be other things buried in the
rice.

You should look up the recipe. Then you won't seem like so much of a fool.

Here. I saved you the effort of googling:

You're right, it's pretty close to what we use. Also chop chicken
legs into 3 sections and if rabbit can be had that is raised for
eating, that as well. Wild rabbits here have a very piney taste.
We're also very heavy on the squid as we all like it.

You know I'm not a huge fan of rice but I do like paella. I haven't had
it since around 1990 when a friend and his wife had a small party and he
cooked up a big pot of it. In a paella pan.

It certainly is a lot of work. Pot roast is much simpler.

That's not a problem these days. Hardly anybody makes paella any more. These days they use that pan to make budae jiigae.

Heres a paella pan. I got it as a bonus when I bought a set of Calphalon
cookware about fifteen years ago. Ive cooked zero paella in it so far, and
I like paella. I have to fix that.

I know what it is but never bought one, paella is not a favorite dish,
the only rice dish I eat is fly lice. Paella can be cooked in any
covered pan/pot I'd use to fry Spam and eggs. I make paella
occasionally but don't use rice, I use orzo. I think orzo makes much
better fly lice.

The Spanish recipe doesn't call for long grain rice; it calls for round
short grain rice. Orzo is a form of pasta; that would make a totally
different dish from paella or your beloved "fly lice".

Looks scrumptious!!

I hope no one breaks into his garage and steals his collection. 3000
beer cans would probably bring in a nice chunk of change at the recycling
center. Hahahahaaaaa

My daughter tried collecting aluminum cans once. Basically, one
empty can is worth a penny. 3000 cans might earn you $30. lol

That's why people who do collect aluminum and sell it check the rates and
sell when it's high. Right now it's around 34¢ per pound.

I looked up and ran the numbers this morning. Still about the
same price as she got 30 years ago. Penny per can.

Current rate 34 cents per pound is what you said,
and it takes about 33 cans to equal a pound.

So....3000 alumimum cans will net you about $30
right now. I guessed right.

I thought it sad when my city started doing recycling.
That was a nice bit of change for the homeless bums,
digging them out of the trash cans each morning.

Then someone here reminded us of states that charge
deposits on cans. That would up the value quite a bit.

That beer can collection pic looks very cool. Quite
impressive. Sold as a whole, the collection would
probably be worth a lot more than just the aluminum value.

In NY there's a 5¢ deposit on each aluminum can, plastic bottle, and
glass bottle... mostly instituted to stop littering and it works. It
used to be the roadways and public places were under a mountain of
empties, now most people return the empties ... all supermarkets have
machines that eat the containers and spit out a reciept that can be
used to pay for groceries or get the cash... the machines are very
fast. It's rare to see cans, plastic, and glass containers as litter.
Naturally some can't be bothered so they put the containers into their
trash bins... the bums go bin to bin collecting the empties, they also
walk the road shoulder picking up the empties that were tossed from
vehicals, typically from the beer drinking teens before they're
stopped by the State Troopers. I walk the shoulder by my house before
mowing and pick up empties, sometimes full six packs that were tossed
because a Trooper was chasing them. Still the depost reduced the
container litter, especially the broken glass bottles. Yet the most
litter is fast food wrappings... another method of packaging fast food
desperately needs to be implemented... eliminate all that styrofoam
that the wind blows for miles and eventually ends up in the lakes,
rivers, and oceans. The worst are those strong plastic straps that
hold six packs together, those tortuous things trap and kill critters.

So, the website you checked breaks the price down by can? I find that
hard to believe.

I haven't a clue how man aluminum cans it takes to make a pound.

Key word, guess. From a website: 12 oz. cola/beer cans that are rinsed
and dry it takes from 32-35 cans to make a pound. I'm also saving the
small cat food cans, plus he's saving washed and dried sardine cans.

But that's ok Gary, we're not asking you to save any aluminum cans.

So, you also have a problem with people collecting something of no
interest to you. We'll add that one to the list.

I actually helped her do that and let her keep the money.
I took her out to a long popular party place in the state
park and we collected many cans there.

The collection place was a large machine outside of
a nearby grocery store. The front of the machine was
a large clown face with an open mouth.

Push a button to turn it on, then toss in your cans.
Each can got an audio "huk huk" clown laugh. She loved
that part (she was only about 10). Once all your cans
were in, push a finished button then the machine would
weigh them all and spit out some change in a coin
slot below the face.

I used to have a beer can collection. It wasn't very extensive. Then
when I got older I realized I hated beer in cans.

Never collected more than 6 at a time. I'd replace them with a new
edition on occasion too.

Many people like the 40oz container because you can drink, then cap it for enjoying the rest later.

Because they didn't put decent beer in cans back then. That's been changing
fast the past few years.

By the same token, a lot of people scoff at wine in screw top bottles.
A number of wineries have found that screw tops are superior to corks
and a lot of excellent wines come in screw top bottles.

Where's the masks!?!?!

The chances of our getting the disease depends on the common sense
and courtesy of others. Which means we're all ****ed.

We were all family bubble with the exception of two people from BC
renting my daughters airbnb place, she asked them and they were
delighted to come, we all enjoyed meeting them, they wore masks as
they were the comefromaways.

Being family doesn't mean you're immune to each other. Most of you
live in different places and do different things. It's not like
everybody there lives in the same house (if it's too small for all
those people). I've already called the Mounties on you and Dudly
Doright will be right over!

Figure out what "bubble" means in this context, bubblehead.

We haven't had any cases recently in our province, so I don't think
the RCMP will react. Sadly most of our deaths, last figures I saw was
57 of 63 were all at government operated nursing homes. A big disgrace
for sure and much for them to answer for in due course. I said to my
kids I felt it proved I was right, nursing homes are baaad places and
why I won't go to one

When I checked I saw that a lot of the deaths happened at Northwood, and
when I looked into that it seemed to be run by a private foundation. In
eastern Ontario more than 80% of the Covid 19 deaths happened in
privately run retirement homes. That percentage is consistent with the
rest of the province. Here in the Niagara Region all the retirement
home Covid 19 deaths were in private homes. There was not an outbreak at
any government run homes until just a few weeks ago and there were no
resident deaths.

A lot of the blame lays with family members. An outbreak at a local
home started when the son and DiL of a resident returned from a couple
months in Florida and went directly to visit her at the home.

The daughter of a friend is a personal support worker who has her own
immunity problems. She was at the home of one of her charges when the
woman's son and DiL showed up. They had just landed at Pearson
International and stopped to visit mom on their way home.

You mean... other than the 2,600 new cases in the last month? Are
you really that ignorant?

See what I mean about how the spread is dependant on courtesy and
common sense? You've just blocked it all out to make yourself feel
safe.
