There was discussion on here about posters receiving unwanted calls on
their cell phones. I really wondered why I had never had a single
call but all becomes clear now.

Yeah, I HAD a Face**** acct, but I DELETED IT!!! And like so many, I dutifully filled out a LOT of my personal information just because Face**** BAITED ME TO! Then one day I had a PIH Epiphany! I was GIVING OUT my Protected Health Information! I am a Registered Nurse, and to uniquely ID a patient before administering medications I ask them there NAME and DOB (Date Of Birth)!

PROTECTED Health information!!! Ask HIPAA!!

You have given out far more and worse personal information here on
rfc, and it's all permanently archived in google groups, which includes
a search function free for all to use.

Anybody can see it, and use it. Your family, your employers, your
patients' parents, your tenants, your bank and all its employees.

It's not the only answer. I've never been near FB and I get occasional
unwanted calls on my cell phone. The calling number is generally the
same exchange as my cell phone, to make it look like a local call.

The auto-dialer doesn't have a clue whether the number is a landline or
a cell phone or a fax machine or an old fashioned modem...

Most of the calls I get automatically click off when they hit my
Answerphone. Sometimes I do get pre-recorded BS messages. It's easy
enough not to bother answering the phone. Some people just can't seem
to resist a ringing phone. (Or these days, a text message. Might be
important! Probably not.)

I've just recently had this conversation with my SO. He's one of those
people, if the phone rings you must answer it. I don't get it. Then he
bitches about getting telemarketing and/or robo calls. How about you
just ignore it if you don't recognize who is calling? If it turns out
to be someone you want to talk to or it's imporant, they'll leave voicemail.

That depends - I do a lot of texting with the grandchildren and
greatgrandchildren, that's their accustomed way of communicating.

Not more than 30 seconds ago the phone rang and the caller id identified it
as "Police Support" with an unrecognizable area code. I've got these in the
past and I don't bother to answer. I immediately pressed the "Block Number"
button on that Pro Call Block device I have but these folks seem to have a
large bank of phone numbers to call from.

I so agree with you, Jill. That's also one of my pet peeves.
Talking to a friend or a customer and soon as their cell phone
rings, they HAVE to answer it and put ME (there in person) on
hold. Grrrrr. So very rude, imo.

I had a cell phone for about 8 years and I never did that to
anyone else. My cell phone rings and I would ignore it until I
finish talking to whoever (or is that whomever?). Occasionally
the person would ask, "Don't you want to answer that?" No...they
can leave a voicemail or not, I'm talking to YOU right now.

Conversely, Im a huge FB user, and Ive never gotten unwanted calls from
unknowns on my cell phone. Ive had this same cell number for 22+ years,
so it isnt a new number for me, either.

Remember the days before caller ID? We'd answer the phone because,
unless it was actually a wrong number, it was someone we knew. Those
were also the days before robo-calls and auto-dialers.

It got ridiculous for a while, but I was quick to sign up for the Do Not
Call Registry and it has eliminated the majority of those calls. Those
guys who call to solicit sales or scams are fair game for harassment.

Pollsters, political parties and charities are able to call despite the
DNC. I am quick to hang up on all three.

Tech never has been perfect.

I remember a Thanksgiving back in the late 60s.

Family had just sat down for dinner when the phone rang.
I answered it, and there were at least a dozen people on the line,
EACH saying THEY hadn't made a call, but gotten one. They were all
across the country. As I was taking with them, a few dropped out, and
you could HEAR the ringing with others answering. Stayed like that for
about 20 minutes until I finally hung up.

Happened again a few weeks later, but only lasted about 10 minutes
that time.

At least no Nigerian Princes came into the call.

and scammers. They 'blind dial' and hope someone answers.

They use an auto-dialer which makes no distinction as to the type of
phone. And they often spoof the number so it looks like a local call or
maybe even a call from someone you know. I don't have a cell phone but
I've actually gotten calls that show up on caller ID as me calling
*myself*. My name, my phone number. I just don't answer the damn phone.

Is it worse than a "go phone"? That's what I have, but I only use it
once a month or so. No sense in buying an expensive toy; I would
never enjoy constantly fingering a telephone like most people do
these days.

I have a nice cell, and I use it for critical things, like the VA (all
my medical stuff), and more. It WILL still work if the internet or
power is out, I can set it to DND when I don't want to be bothered,
and some things (Uber) require it for service.

I dod research, and got a great one from Amazon, and for less than
$200, wheich works easily as well as a friend's Galaxy S9, which
cost him almost $900.

I also have a powerbank that can run the phone for 5 days or more
before needing a recharge.

Hard to say. it's a Doro 626, which costs $50 from Consumer Cellular.
The plan is great (read: cheap!), but the phone is junk. You gotta buy

I'm a Huawei fan, currently using a P30 Pro. Mainly for the camera,
which is the best available on smartphones. Always been into
photography and yes, it's a compromise over a proper camera but
carrying even a compact digital camera everywhere can be inconvenient
most of the time.

Even my wife who's always loved iPhones has become a convert, she has
my old P20 Pro now. So pleased she's seen the light and gotten away
from that overpriced, overrated Apple crap.

numbers. One major source is employees selling databases from telcos.

All I know is, I don't get those calls. Back in land line days I got
a few but that was easily solved (then) by blocking the number that
called. They did bring in a Do Not Call list but I gather it was
worse if you subscribed to that.

I get an occasional one on my number, however they are now flagged as
suspect by the phone company so naturally I don't answer them. I
hardly ever make or receive phone calls the old way anymore anyway. I
use apps such as Line, Wechat and Messenger for most calls now.

L, I'm not on Faecesbook either but I get a call from those robocallers
on almost a daily basis. I ignore them, having call display, and most
cut out after the 4th ring but occasionally they leave a message.
Recently, I had several messages from a Chinese woman, probably a tax
scam targeting elderly Chinese.

I seldom answer any call when I don't recognize the number,
but a few times I have, on my cell, and gotten the Chinese woman.
I just hang up.

I get them. If you press 2 you can get a live person. I did that and
tried to order a pupu platter. We got disconnected though.

I have a line for most of the calls if I get a real person. Some will
ask "how are you?" so I always tell them thanks for asking and proceed
to tell them. Yeah, woke up with an upset stomach and now I have the
shits.

The DNC registry has not been a total success, but it certainly is an
improvement. About the time the registry came out I was getting several
soliciting calls a day. After I registered the calls diminished. The
scammers are now calling from overseas and it seems to come in spurts.
Any calls I get now are fair game. If I am not up to much I will try to
keep them on the line as long as possible. I figure that the time I
keep them on the line is time they can't be hassling other people.
Maybe it is working because I haven't had any calls for a while.
