I've never seen any price here other than $14.99 even when lobsters were selling very cheap in New England a few years ago. This was at my old beloved Farm Fresh that closed down last year (or was it the year before?) They always had a tank of live lobsters. Only tiny ones too...1 pounders I guess...just barely legal to keep. These days I shop at either Food Lion or Harris Teeter. I've actually never looked in those stores. I'm not even sure they sell live ones....probably just frozen tails. I'll look when I next go this week. Just curious to see if either offer live ones. I've never noticed but then I haven't looked either. |

I went through the casino in Niagara Falls. I am not a gambler and did not stop at any of the tables or machines. I have never seen a more depressed looking bunch of people. I know quite a few people who go. A lot of them go with the idea that they are willing to blow a certain amount of money and consider it a night of entertainment. They all tell you how much they win, but they don't tell you about the losses. I had a negative role model that reminds me why I should not gamble. Crazy Joe was a gambler. He bet on the horses, on sporting events, played poker etc. He considered himself to be a high roller. He used to spend a lot of time in a bar where we used to hang out. One day he came in to the bar with money in his pocket. He live in a hotel across the street from the bar and he owed them rent that he had to pay that day or he was going to be evicted. He had to pay $250 and he had the money. One of his gambling buddies bought him a beer and bet him that $250 that he would not pay his rent. Then he challenged him to a game of shuffle board. Joe kept losing. He tried all the gambling stunts, like double or nothing, and just kept losing. He lost the $250. He go evicted. He owed his buddy $250. |

But, but, but, you can get rich there. All you need is the right poker hand or roll of the dice. When I was about 12 I was at Jimmy's house one summer afternoon and we were playing cards. Jimmy's father came home early and asked if we wanted to learn how to play better. He gave us a lesson on gambling and why the house always wins. The few times I was in a casino I may has ****ed away 20 bucks for entertainment value, but it is really dumb the way people live for the fantasy of the big win. |

Some people are bad gamblers. I had friend who liked to gamble. We used to play backgammon. I am not normally a gambler, but he was so bad at gambling that it was easy to win money from him. Betting with backgammon is easy enough. If you win you get one point. If you get all your men off before the opponent gets in off it is a gammon, and worth two points, and going out while he still has a man in your inner board is a backgammon and is double that.... 4. Then there is the doubling cube. When it is your turn to roll you can, before rolling, double the value. The opponent can then accept the double and whatever the score at the end of the game is doubled, or he can decline the double and concede the game at the current value. The opponent must double you before you can double him again. Simple enough. We usually played for $1 a game. There were many times when he was way ahead of me and heading for a gammon or maybe even a backgammon, and, sure that he was going to win, would double me. I would decline the double and concede the one point. I would lose $1 rather than playing it out for a minimum of $2 and possibly $4. He was a sucker for a double. If I was way ahead I could double him and gammon him. If he had followed my strategy he would lost $1 instead of $4. There were many times when he won more games than I did, but I would win more money. While I was always pretty confident about my ability to win the game, I would not try that doubling tactic with anyone else. He was equally bad at lotteries. We once went to a party in a bar in Niagara Falls NY and bought some Empire State Lottery tickets. I bought one for a $ and won $10. I pocketed the money. I played all night and every time he won he used the winnings to buy more tickets. Then when he crapped out on those tickets he would buy some more. In his mind he wone a couple hundred bucks. In reality, he spent $150 on tickets in addition to the ones he won. Another time I was on a coffee break with a co-worker who bought a $5 scratch ticket. He scratched it and won a free ticket. He scratched that one a couple more tickets. He scratched them and won a couple more. He ended up with 5 tickets in addition to the one he paid $5. He was thrilled with the win. When the night of the big draw came along he had his 5 tickets in hand. He didn't win anything, but he was still a winner with those 5 extra tickets. That is how casinos and lotteries make so much money. |

The closest casino to me...Riverside, Iowa...is fairly new. Smoking is allowed on the
gaming floors, but not anywhere else. The air handlers should be top of the line and powerful enough to handle anything. BUT! The minute you walk through the front door, cigarette smoke is all you can smell. The buffet is about 75 yards down a hall, around a large curve. It is beautifully decorated by colored fountains, fancy logos, lights, etc., including a large circle in an intersection of several hallways where you can stand in the very center and yell as loudly as you can, and it is not heard anywhere else, including just outside the marked center. In any event, by the time you get to your table in the area where the buffet is, you don't smell the smoke anymore. Still, that initial whiff at the entrance to the whole thing is a real turnoff. (The food is very good, and changed/refreshed promptly. The servers clear used plates and utensils very quickly, replacing utensils as necessary, plus refilling glasses with whatever you are drinking.) N. |

Oh well, I lost a dollar and of course I'd rather have won a dollar. |

Like you said, fresh and replenished often with waitstaff promptly removing dirty dishes, and a selection to choose from to please anyone. |

I have lived all my life in a twenty-four hour a day gambling state. I did gamble a little at blackjack and craps when young. I was done gambling by thirty. Why? I hate to lose twenty bucks more than I like winning a hundred. A wise little birdie whispered in my ear, "cheap, cheap, cheap". leo |

Leo, I gambled in Monaco (promptly quit when my $20 self-imposed limit was gone), and also
in one of those old mining towns in the hills of Colorado...same result). We went to the Riverside Casino just to check out the food. I always thought gambling was the equivalent of just throwing your money out the window. N. |
