Black beans

I cooked some black beans tonight but had none of the normal things I'd use
for black bean soup so... I added cumin, black pepper, dried onions and
jalapenos. After they were cooked, I added salt and a little tomato paste.
They are soooo good! Am trying to work with what I have until I do grocery
shop on Wed. Will buy some rye flour tomorrow or the next day so I can take
the rye bread to my friend as I'm taking her shopping. Will get that
somewhere locally. Hopefully it's something that's readily available.

Winco has rye flour in the bulk section. I get mine there.
I will eat black beans but I really prefer the sweetness of kidney
beans. I often sub kidney beans when black beans are called for.

I like them both in my home made Baked Beans, along with garbanzos and black eyed peas!

The beans sound good!

Rye should be easy available but expect the price to be near double of
white. It's supply and demand there.

I found a black bean chili recipe a year or so ago on line. Was called
"Weekday Chili" or something similar. I you don't see it with a quick
Google I'll dig out the printout and give you the web site name.

I agree. Good beans. Have you tried mayocoba? They are also quite good.

I know you arent asking for recipes, but have you ever made a Cuban dish
called Moros y Cristianos? Its black beans and rice. So good, and has a
flavor profile I think youd like. I know you currently prefer to use
brown rice, and I think it would work equally as well as white rice (with
modifications for cooking time), and is fairly customizable to accommodate
different pepper types (or no peppers at all). You can even serve it hot
or cold as a salad (which goes over well at potlucks, btw). Just something
Im throwing out there for those days you wonder €śwhat should I make to use
up these black beans€ť?

Can't do black bean soup with kidney beans.
For the soup all one need do is fry some pork chops, remove chops, add
canned black beans with liquid to the skillet, mash and add Penzeys
Adobo, add water to consistancy one desires or serve as refried bean,
serve soup or refried beans with lime wedges and the chops... I reheat
the chops in the skillet of black beans.

No meat in my soup but I do have plenty of onion, fresh tomatoes, jalapeno

I highly doubt that. I have yet to hear of a death by kidney bean although
they are purported to be poisonous if not cooked properly. I eat them at

All you have to do is bring them to a boil for a few minutes before cooking.
And don't eat them raw. No biggie.

I don't make beans and franks anymore but when I occasionally

i usually eat the ones i grow, once in a while we
make soups with others that i don't grow (white beans
and split green peas). i haven't ever grown favas
and don't plan on it. i'd rather grow peas if i were
going to use the space for something different.

fresh peas are yum. :) but i like shelly beans
even more than peas. shelly lima beans are our
all-time favorites. this past summer i finally
had a big enough patch that we were able to eat them
often enough to feel like it was worth it.

I like black beans but usually only use them in combination with other

I've grown a lot of broad beans (fava beans) and I love them. The
climate where we live now, is a bit too hot for them so I've stopped
growing them. I had to water them often, which I'd forget.

When I was a kid, we often had TV dinners on Friday night. I got the beans
and wieners just for the beans. But I always swapped the wieners with my
brother for something from his meal. Most likely a vegetable.

I wish I had enough space to grow fresh peas. I tried one year but in a
planter box, the yield is too small. I remember eating them straight from
the vine, pod and all.
