Default Not a Pressure Cooker But...

My toaster caught on fire! Sorry, no news at 11:00 or link to a news story.

I was toasting a slice of sourdough bread and the toast was done. I had
just taken it out of the slot with when flames burst up!

I quickly unplugged the toaster and grabbed a box of baking soda from
the cupboard. I doused the flames.

I have NO idea why the toaster suddenly caught on fire. I keep the
crumb-tray clean and empty. It was a 10 year old toaster but that's no
excuse.

Good thing I never toast bread without standing there waiting for it.

Yes, thank goodness you were standing right there or there could have been
some serious damage to the house or at least the kitchen!

Good thing! I didn't know toaster fires were a thing. Buy a new
toaster. Perhaps get a electrician to check your wall socket. Google
the brand to see if others have had the same experience.
Hmm. I just googled "toaster fire". You're not alone.

I've had toaster ovens in years past. I don't really get the point.
What is the benefit of having a toaster oven?

I use the small Black and Decker that I bought years ago for toast, muffins,
things like hot pockets etc, that dh eats. I got a large one free from
credit card rewards which I use for many things when I don't want to turn on
the regular oven. I cook things like chicken , fish, and anything I want
crispy that I don't use a microwave for. I make lots of smaller portion
things for dh that I don't actually eat, cupcakes and things like that. It
doesn't heat up my kitchen and heats quickly to temp.

I have a mini oven but not sure what you call a toaster oven. I very
recently bought this one for the caravan:

The one we have at home has a rotisserie Which D uses Since that is the
only cooking he does I like it a LOT lol

I've got a B & D toaster oven and love it for small things as well. Last
night I did two slices of garlic bread in it and turned out perfect as
usual.

But how is it for making actual *toast*? The ones I've had (granted,
decades ago; I don't think they'd invented Hot Pockets yet!) were more
like a small oven than a toaster. I didn't get much use out of the ones
I had (both of which were gifts).

A single serving of nachos
Toasted cheese sandwiches
Heating pastry just a titch

I got my toaster oven as a wedding present, so I might as well use it.

I'm pretty sure I got my first toaster oven as a wedding present.
Didn't use it much. I don't make nachos nor do I ever buy pastry, so...
Toasted cheese sandwiches I do on the stovetop, in a small non-stick
skillet. Different strokes.

You don't need two appliances. Toaster ovens don't excel at making
toast, but they are good for many other heating and cooking tasks where
you don't need the big oven. Heat up a muffin or a roll that would not
fit in a toaster slot, broil a hot dog,.

I think the small Black and Decker (really old and small compared to the
models now) does excel at making toast.

Twenty years later that toaster would cost about twenty dollars.
A couple years ago our twenty year old Kitchen Aid toaster died and no
longer made so I bought a four slice wide slot Oster for $22... has
all the features and toasts perfectly... exterior is brushed stainless
steel. A couple years ago this toaster was $22 at Walmart:

That's a good idea, except that it takes four times longer to toast if
you are standing there waiting for it.

Bringing water to a boil takes longer if I'm standing right there.

It made a *poof* sound and I turned around and saw flames. Surprise!

Baking soda is a very handy thing to have on hand. I rarely use it for
actual baking but it's a great thing for putting out fires.

Note to self: buy more baking soda

It was the toaster. I had already removed the slice of toast from the
slot. Perhaps a small piece of bread broke off and somehow got stuck to
the still-hot element. I didn't really have time to analyze it. All I
know is I saw flames and said to myself, "Well this isn't good." I
grabbed the baking soda and doused the fire.

And yes, I have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. I didn't even think
about it, I just grabbed the baking soda.

I have 2 real old sunbeam toasters that work and they have nothing to push down, the bread goes down by itself.
