Sometimes, you have to remember the simple foods. This is one of them.
In Hawaii, there is a simple macaroni 'salad'. Sure it can be fancied up, but normally it's pure simplicity is what folks like! Boil up some macaroni, elbow is the common one here. Drain then add Mayo to your liking. In the purest sense, that is all that it is! Common though is to add a few grates of carrot for color, or you might get a little green onion. Sure, we could all get a billion fancy additions going on, but the simple basic works better than you think! carol |

I'd add sweet relish at least. |

I add parsely, minced bell pepper, grated carrot, and usually a salad dressing (Ranch) rather than mayo. I prefer to use rotini/rotelle pasta rather than elbows. Sometimes I add diced pepperoni. If I add cheese it would be grated parmesan. Mac n' Cheese is served hot, typically baked. Macaroni Salad is served cold. awaiian Macaroni Salad must contain diced SPAM. |

Probably the most served mac salad would be Zippy's. I'm not a fan of the stuff but I'll typically take a bite of it if it's on a plate. Looks like I'll have to pay more attention when eating this stuff. http://dining.staradvertiser.com/wp-...s_070112_2.jpg |

"....elbow is the common one here". I was gonna crack wise and say, "There's another kind!?" After looking up "Maccheroni" on Wiki, I decided to keep my mouth shut. I also found, "square-ended pasta corta ("short-length pasta"), so I guess the macaroni used fer mac salad would be, "corta macaroni". Yes? No? nb |

Really, it's identical to the way I make potato salad. Generally, I prefer potato salad, anyway. I've never met a potato I didn't like. Cindy Hamilton |

If it's got a nice variety of ingredients it can be quite good but I leave that dish preparation to someone else. Wasn't there someone here a while back that claimed their sister used sweetened condensed milk in her macaroni salad?? We questioned whether they meant plain old condensed milk but they swore she used the thick stuff that is used for many desserts. |

I like to just add a little fine chopped onion to it. I learned this dish in Pearl City but had it many other places like Ala Moana. I even had it at the Hale Koa. It may have changed since 1989 (when I left Hawaii) but it was really commmon then to not fancy it up. Carol |

That jes stuff sucks ass. |

I've never paid any attention to it because it's always there in plate lunches. The next time I see it I'll pay it more mind. I favor Japanese potato salad myself. I just can't get enough of it. Perhaps I'll teach my niece how to make it when she comes over - sort of a cultural exchange type thing. ![]() |

I liked it well but others may not? The big difference (at least in Sasebo, may not match other areas) was they added a tarty vinegar to it. What I liked about it at Guyemon's (a chain there, call it a 3+star with decent prices) was it had distinct little bits of other stuff and was rarely the identical things twice. |

In Hawaii, they may add little more but it's basically the same thing you mean. I'm making some more right now. Just basic. I'll decide the side additions later but they will be minimal like yours. |

It's not that easy to find on this rock. You have to go to a Japanese restaurant. My wife's friend said it was the best potato salad she'd ever had. Who am I to disagree? As usual, I have a photo. https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/...MmUuAkTLrPDlrc |
