Default burnt ale

Among the foodies on this board, I figure there ought to
be a few alers, so...

I tried Arrogant ******* ale yesterday, a dark brew.
The only thing I noticed was a strong burnt taste, like
french roast coffee. I can't say it was pleasant, though
at least it got a rise out of my taste buds, unlike Coors
dish washing liquid.

Does this character indicate malty or hoppy?

It can be both. With the dark ales I find you can get a bit of a burnt
caramel taste, which is malt, but it's not unusual to also have the
bitter hoppiness in there also.

A couple.

I call it "swill"

> Does this character indicate malty or hoppy?

More "malty" than "hoppy". NOTE: Hop Stoopid (8.0%abv) is a very
hoppy dbl IPA and a bullet costs waaay less than than a bullet of ABA.

I appears ABA has split from Stone Brewing, becoming an indepedent
brand. Stone has been dumming down its beers, fer years, by
decreasing the malt bill, thereby decreasing the final abv (alcohol by
volume). Stone IPA usta be 7.0%abv, now it's 6.8%abv. I seem to
recall ABA usta be 8-something abv, now it's 7.2. Less malt, less
alcohol. I no longer buy ABA. I refuse to buy an IPA stregth beer
fer almost $5USD per bullet. (see Hop Stoopid note)

Europeans seem to be decreasing the amt of beer they put in a bottle.
For example, Carlsberg Elephant beer (lager, 7.2%abv) usta be a full
12ozs. It's now being sold in 11.2 oz bottles. American brewers ARE
reducing the abv. Both methods screw the buyer and make more (or the
same) $$$$ for the brewer. 8|

The lite beer drinkers would never touch steel reserve 8.1, it'd burn their throats.
