Default So... Corned Beef & Cabbage

Personally, I don't care about St. Patrick's Day, green beer, parades or
green-tinted water fountains. But I do love corned beef and cabbage.

So I went to Publix today to pick up corned beef brisket. It was on
sale for $3.99 (I've never actually found it for less than that). The
grocery store was packed! I can't say it had anything to do with the
price of corned beef. Hee!

The thing is, I had to hunt for it. I walked up and down the meat
counter, which is at the very back of the store. I wondered if I was
going blind. No corned beef. I finally asked the butcher. He told me
it's in a "refrigerated case up front. Don't ask me why!"

As a consumer, I expect to find meat in the meat department. On special
or not, as a retailer, I'd want the customer to *have* to walk to the
back of the store. Purely good marketing strategy, IMHO, since you have
to go down other aisles to get to the meat department.

I did buy items from other areas of the store. I had a grocery list
that had nothing to do with Corned Beef & Cabbage. It didn't benefit
Publix one bit (marketing wise) to put the corned beef at the front of
the store.

I did get a good workout walking from the back of the store to the front
to get it. It was a tad annoying not to be able to find it where I
expect to find meat.

At any rate, I bought two corned beef briskets (one for the freezer).
And a small cabbage. At least the cabbage was where I expected to find
it - in the produce department!

I will be having corned beef & cabbage tomorrow. I'll likely cook it in
the crock pot simply because it's easiest. I add the (quartered)
cabbage towards the end of cooking; push it down into the cooking
liquid. Even with the shrinkage of the beef, it's still enough for
several meals for me. If the brisket is overly fatty (that hasn't been
the case the last few years) it's easy enough to trim *before* cooking.

I like corned beef & cabbabe so much, I don't mind eating it for a
couple of days. Leftovers freeze well.

Maybe that with the growing number of morally superior vegetarians and
vegans, they've put the meat department way in the back, where there's
less chance people see you.

You would have missed it at my store if you went to the meat counter.
Instead, when you stepped through the front door they had a cold case
right there. (Hey, let me get a cart first, O.K.?)

I did ultimately find it. And I think you also got my point.

Thank you! It's a bad strategy, IMHO. If all the person wants is a
corned beef brisket they'll just grab it from the front cold case at the
entrance and head straight for the checkout.

At the very least they should have had *some* at the meat counter. I
didn't go there strictly for corned beef. I had a list of other things.
But hey, I definitely did *not* go there for exercise!

It's a 55,000 sq. ft. store. The meat department is in the back, not by
the front door. I don't appreciate having to jog (not literally!) from
the back to the front to put corned beef in my cart.

I don't think the butcher/meat department employees appreciated having
to run packages of corned beef to the cooler at the front, either. He
sounded a bit exasperated when he told me where it was.

From this I gather there were a lot of other people, not just me,
asking him and expecting to find corned beef in the meat department.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and same thing - they had moved a
cold case right up front. Just like Jill wondered, I agree - you would
think they would keep it in the meat department so you walk by more food
that maybe you'll impulse buy.

This is the only time I've ever seen a meat case in front of store. This
must be some new harebrained marketing strategy.

They do it often where I am, corned beef and other things like cabbage and
carrots next to it, they do it when chickens are on sale etc. plus they
have more of the same stock in the meat department as well.

Here they do both at the store I usually shop at, in front and in the meat
department.
