Default Drying out here, Virginia Beach

Some parts of Virginia beach are still impassable. Lots of downed
trees and power outages. A huge number of places closed tomorrow still.

Not sure if Gary is up. He's more towards the power outage impacted
areas (also cox cable outages).

Jill is probably still holed up someplace trying to get back into Dataw.

Jill did not leave Dataw. At least, her last message on rpca said that
she planned to remain in her house with Buffy. She felt the government
was overreacting. She pointed out some of the problems people fact
during an evacuation.

I've seen photos of Jill's home and other homes in her community. The
homes there are very well built and hers is one of the more solidly
built homes. So long as she has food, plenty of wine, and books to
read she will be fine. With no electric she won't be able to cook but
there are plenty of foods that can be eaten straight from the can. I
don't remember seeing pictures of any large trees near her house so
she shouldn't suffer any damage. If she has an LED lantern and
batteries she'll have plenty of light. In the past I suggested this
for power failures, I have this and it works great, ten cranks and the
radio plays for 15 minutes:

I have a very similar unit, plus 4 hand crank flashlights (got tired of
stocking batteries for occasional needs), 2 larger lanterns with the
big square batteries (waterproof, can out out in the rain) and several
small LED types that through a LOT of light for 2-4 AA batteries
depending on unit.

For ones that take batteries, Check out the Coleman Micropacker lantern
(3 AA batteries and comes with them). Good amount of light and easy to
put wherever you need. I have 3 of them now. I have another one that
takes only 4 AA batteries, runs roughly 72 hours on high and can light
my livingroom and kitchen (neither are small and they are open to one
another). Call it 10 nights if left on all night at high power, 20 or
more days at trickle feed as a nightlight.

The hand crank simple flashlights reside 1 each per car, and 2 in the
house.

Flashlights and LED lanterns are a PIA and don't really cast good light.
Know what I used? Actual hurricane lamps. Yes, the kind that take
oil and wicks. No need to worry about batteries (I've got tons of
those) or bulbs burhing out as long as you have oil. I used the stupid
Coleman LED lantern to light the bathroom so Buffy could find her litter
box. The room I spent most of my time in was lit by a hurricane lamp.

Um, you're not supposed to shove those LED flashlights into your
bodily orifices for illumination! LOL
Then you haven't used them... one LED lantern will light an entire
room for a week on three D cells as well as a 100W incondescent
bulb... LEDs actually cast better/cleaner light. I've been in the
process of changing all my lighting, indoor and outdoor, to LED...
emits far better/brighter light for 1/10 the cost of incondescent. I
like the outdoor fixtures that come on at dusk and go off at dawn, I
don't mind that they are on all night when they use so little
electricity. I like this for deck and patio, for 14 Watts emits a lot
more light than two 150 Watt incondescent floodlights. I have three
of these:
https://www.amazon.com/MaxLite-MLSEC...g+b y+maxlite
I have the 70 Watt version of this on my barn , lights a huge area
like daylight:
http://www.superiorlighting.com/LED_...101caal068.htm
This one lights a large area behind my garden shed:
https://hyperikon.com/product/led-wall-pack-45w/
I have two of these floodlights, one for each driveway, fantastic
lighting:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F94U1RE..._t1_B00BFJ7IAA
I placed this over the bathroom vanity over the wall mirror, at 10
Watts out performs the old fixture's four 60 W incondescent bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/Dailyart-Bath...rror+led+light
LED fixtures may at first seem pricey but they more than pay for
themselves within the first 3-4 months with lower electric bills, and
no bulbs to buy or change, a huge advantage with difficult to reach
bulbs. As indoor incondescnt bulbs burn out I've been repacing them
with LEDs. I keep the outside well lit to discourage nocturnal
preditors.

That's just silly, cats don't need a lantern to find their litter box.

>The room I spent most of my time in was lit by a hurricane lamp.

Oil lamps are neither safe or healthful... they can easily be knocked
over by pets and they smoke... their fumes are a carcinogen... they
were originally intended for outdoor use, and designed prior to the
advent of electric lighting. If yours are highly decorative then
display them but don't use them, if ordinary they belong in the trash.
Even the fumes from paraffin candles are a carcinogen, only beeswax
candles are safe.

Hi Jill, you need to check out the new ones for lights. I am not
kidding that I can light my 16x40ft living room with one for 5 nights
running on 2 AA batteries. The bigger one with 4 AA batteries is as
good as the regular lights. Your hurricane lamp throughs 1/4 the light
of these.

I'm just thankful that we were finally able to get rid of our lamps
with wicks and oil. I didn't like the idea that we could make an
actual house fire worse by storing lamp oil. Or having fire- lit
lamps in a wind storm. Or having lit lamps with a pet around. Or
cleaning the lamps. Or trimming the wicks. We used to use them in
the old days when we were just married and the power went out. Now
there are such powerful flashlights for so little money. Or special
Coleman lanterns. Or candles without fire. I love the new options.
No smoke, no smell, no soot.

Steve, I'm a smoker so I'm not terribly worried about soot. But yes, I
buy smokeless type oils designed specifically for these lamps. The
shades on the lamps don't get sooty unless you set the wick too high.

That reminds me, I need to put lamp oil on my shopping list.

For the record: I didn't go anywhere. Mandatory evac order and they
locked the island down. I'm still here and so is the house and so is my
cat.

You are so "YAWN" about this storm. I'd like to hear what Buffy
has to say about that day. Please allow her to post.

That's cute! Buffy shows no interest in my computer. She does like to
snooze on my chair when I'm not sitting on it. Oh, sometimes she sits
on my lap. My desk has a roll-out keyboard tray and she likes to
push it away from me. Don't play with that stupid computer, pay
attention to me!

heheh Mia always loved to hang out with me while I used the computer.

I have to be very patient in the mornings when using the computer. A
good third of the time I have either Annie or Lucy blocking the screen
and/or keyboard, at least until they settle down into my lap.

Most people have a mouse on their computer, not a ferret!

That's fine, when you get away with it. Hurricane Juan came ashore a
mile or so away from where I lived then and was I glad I had prepared,
such as bringing the BBQ in - many people lost patio doors when BBQs
smashed through them, leaving their houses further exposed to the
wind.

I watched four lovely trees give in and fall and when the power went,
I was without power for ten days. If I had intended to stay living
out there, I would have bought a generator after that against another
outage. Luckily I had a nice little propane ring which I was able to
donate to a local family with a newborn who were boiling water on
their BBQ, they were embarrassed because they hadn't bothered to
prepare.

Matthew took out power to 185,000 NSians as it went on its way, but
many said they were okay with generators installed since Juan.

She doesn't have opposable thumbs and at any rate I doubt she'd be a
good typist. Allow me to project my impressions of Buffy during the
hurricane.

Buffy was perplexed. Why is it so dark? What's up with that odd lamp
on the table? (Hurricane/oil lamp).

Damn, all the other rooms are *really* dark. Where the heck is my
litterbox? Who turned out the lights?!

Buffy thinks hmmm, okay... I know my way around this house. It's just
darker than usual. Oooh, found the food and water. The litterbox is in
that other room. It's dark in here. Oh yeah, there it is.

I'll have a snack and then go find Momma. She's on the other side of
the house in that room with the light.

Cats really do see better in the dark than people.

It too parts of NE NC days and some unfortunate souls weeks to dry out.

I'm in Elizabeth City - Oxford Heights, to be exact. Luckily our house
didn't flood but we live in the middle of the subdivision. People who
live close to the bridge and the creek flooded badly. We lost power for
over 24 hours and couldn't get out of the neighborhood until Tuesday AM.
