Same here over 12 years ago. I had Mr.Kitty for many years then my
daughter moved back in bringing 2 ferrets. Ferrets are super playful
and they discovered Mr.Kitty up on a chair fairly quickly. They would
jump up on the chair and climb all over him with play-biting. He let
them do that. He put up with it but I could tell that he was annoyed.
lol! Anyway, he did accept them as new members of the family right
from the start.

My daughter has one ferret that she's trying to get me to adopt. It's
tempting but still a little too soon for me. I don't miss ferrets in
general, I miss one certain one. This last death was the worst and
it's "the straw that broke the camel's back." I am so sick and tired
of getting to know and love one then holding them in my arms short
years later as they die. I need a break. I don't deal with death well
at all.

I'm sure that's exactly why. She's not trying to dump one on me but it
just so happens that this one doesn't get along with the others and I
now have no ferret. She thinks it would be perfect for me.

I'm sure it would be too but I'm trying to not do this again for a
bit. That's why I tell her NOT to bring it just for a visit so I can
meet her. If she brought it here for a visit, I would melt and keep
it. I need to be ferret free for a while.

My brother had to have his dog put down about two months ago. He really
misses the dog.... and the routine that he had because of the dog. We
have been urging him to get another one. My son volunteers at the Human
Society and lets him know every time a nice dog comes up for adoption.

Would they suggest "replacing" a child if one died? When my little
dog Sampson died I called to let the apartment manager know to take the
$10 "pet rent" off my account. She replied, "Just get another one."
NO. It came across as rather callous. I had no interest in getting
another dog. I'd had him for 18 years and my heart was broken. A year
later I still didn't want another dog. That's when a cat (eventually
named Persia) showed up at my patio door and demanded to be let in.
Heh. She lived with me for 13 years (she was about 16 when she died).
Again, I did not plan to get another cat.

Last year at the end of May Buffy's owner died. Okay, she needs a home
so I'll take her. It was my decision. I love her to pieces but I'm
sure if anyone had been pressuring me to adopt her (or any cat) I'd have
balked.

Daughter has never kept ferrets to the end. She has no idea how it
feels to love one then watch them go downhill for many months and then
die in your arms one night...or at a vet to get euthenized. I've had 4
of them and they all died right in my bedroom and 3 of them right in
my arms when the final moment came. The 4th one died after I left for
a few minutes. Ever be right there as a loved one dies? It haunts you
forever.

married she is adopting rescues and she has 6 of them now. Still
though...she's never experienced a loved one go downhill then die.

Of her 6 now, one of them always fights with the other ferrets but
gets along fine by herself with a human. She seems to think I have a
need and this one would be perfect probably. She's said a few times,
let me just bring it for a visit.

I don't want another so I tell her NOT to bring it for a visit.

It's a dilemma for me too. I don't want one right now and maybe not
for several years until I retire. But by then this one will be dead
and not lived the happier life that she could have lived with me. How
do you deal with this? There are always plenty of needy rescues of any
species. I just don't want to hear about them for a bit.

You can't deal with it by taking every ferret you worry about. If I did
that I would have a houseful of rescue dogs. I wonder if that is what
happened to the woman who had my Poppy. I told you about all the dogs she
had. I am sure she took them for good reasons but look what happened! Do
what you can, when you feel you can!

That is why I never enter the SPCA My cats found me without that.
Did a fund raiser for a local shelter, a no kill shelter, and
involving all the bridge club, raised nearly three thousand bucks, two
car loads of old towels but asked the man to meet me outside. He was
insisting I come in and look around and I told him why I could not do
that lol

Reminds me, the catnip is growing nicely, I must start knitting mice
that I stuff with catnip and sell at Xmas to make a few bucks for the
shelter.

Agreed. I (by choice) adopt older rescue medical issue dogs but I keep
it to 2. All but one was 11 years and up when I got them. My youngest
is 9-10 and my other turns 14 on 2 July. It's painful to lose them
too, but there is a joy in knowing a pet who never would have been
adopted due to age, had final happy comfortable years.

Wait until the time is right though.

I can understand that. You (general you) have to try hard to accept that
their lives are short, and that every day is another one you have with
them. My favorite pets are cats, and while they live longer, they don't
live long enough. But I've always taken in another when room has been
made for one by the powers that be. I don't judge anyone who isn't ready.

While I agree this last time round in December I had only lost the
last cat a couple of weeks before a friend was pressing me to accept
this cat who needed a home - I did rather reluctantly but am very glad
now that I did.
