My lid was stuck!

This was a first. I am making baked beans in the Crock Pot and I attempted
to lift the lid to taste for seasonings. But the lid was totally stuck. I
really had to exert force to get it off. This is my newer one. Oval shaped
and the lid is glass with a metal rim.

Just drape a hot washcloth over the lid. That will equalize the
pressure and the lid will come up easily.

I did get it off. As I said, I had to exert a lot of force. I only posted
this because we were recently discussing the beef roast and the difference
between cooking in a Crock Pot and the oven. As you can see, the Crock does
have a very good seal to the lid.

I got the lid off. I only posted because of the recent beef roast thing
posted by...W? I think. To show that indeed the Crock does have a very
strong seal to the lid.

It has nothing to do with the fit of the crock pot lid. A vacuum has
been created and the way to break the vacuum is what I told you. I've
copied a paragraph from the 'Net so that you can see what I say is
true. It can happen to "any" lid on any pot.

"Fixing a Vacuum-Sealed Lid
Once you realize your lid is stuck, remove the pot from the heat
source. Continuing to cook with a stuck lid will only reinforce the
vacuum, as it is a result of the difference in temperature inside and
outside the pot. Too strong a vacuum can warp some lids and pans. Try
removing the lid by hand, wearing oven gloves to protect from the
heat. If this does not work, place a steaming hot towel on the lid for
a couple of minutes to raise the outer temperature. Try removing the
lid again. Repeat as necessary until the lid comes off."

This is kind of funny. It was mentioned that some people were getting
pressure from steam as the pot cooked. This article is suggesting that
cooking will create a vacuum. The physics are not adding up unless the
pot is cooling.

I was about to type that. A heated pot with a liquid will form steam
pressure which will blow the lid *off* if it has no release. Cooling down
it would form a vacuum as less dense hot air contracts. You'd need a
perfect seal, however.

Think canning jars.

I was thinking it was stuck because some baked bean juice got around
the rim of the crock.

Heat makes steam which creates pressure which would force the lid *off* not
seal it down. You in fact have an imperfect seal which allowed steam and
bean juices to escape sealing the lid when it got baked on. If you like I
can post a paper on thermodynamics and fluid pressure equilibrium. The laws
of physics exist in your crackpot .. I mean crockpot.

That one had me scratching my head. I could not figure how heating
something up was creating a vacuum. My experience and schooling tells me
that cooking it increases volume and pressure, and that they vacuum
would happen when the cooling happened. However, it happened in the
world of Bove, so all bets are off.

I was thinking yet another Bove Troll. Crock pots do not produce any
steam, they produce water vapor. The only way any pot lid will seal
to the pot is as it cools and only if it makes a good seal, the Bove
obviously let the crock pot cool to room temperature and likely let it
sit at room temperature for many hours, and that it sealed means there
was probably a lot of greasy schmutz around the rim... a lot of slobs
don't bother washing a pot if they will use it again later in the
week. From reading the Bove's posts I doubt she exerts any effort at
all with anything, I imagine she never cleans anything including
herself, her abode is likely far filthier than a pig sty.

I have a big ole Mirro pressure cooker/canner and I just got a new gasket for it. It's 38 years old (gawd I'm that old!) and the old gasket was badly dried out and shrunk. I got a new gasket and it fit perfectly!

Never once has the glass lid on my crockpot gotten stuck. The plastic
lid on my *old* crockpot never got stuck, either. It's just another

My guess is that your lid has a soft neoprene gasket. Most slow cookers won't have this nor do they need it. You probably have one of those cookers with a lid that can be clamped down for easy and safe transport. The gasket provides a leakproof seal when clamped but the top probably has some small vents through it to prevent a build up of pressure when the lid is clamped down. The lid gets stuck because the heat causes the soft gasket to stick to the surface of the container.

You made me look it up Ed ;)
I suppose there *could* be a movie in it?

It did come with something to clamp it down for transport.

Did you start on high and then switch to low before attempting to lift
the lid? A partial vacuum could form when the temperature was reduced,
using water condensed between the lid and crock as a seal.

That might possibly be the case if the ambient temperature was greater
than the temperature inside the Bove's crock pot. I might suggest the
whole story is a crock.

Look on the top of the lid, you'll find some vent holes. They are needed because without them, the lid would really get stuck if you turned off the heat and let it the cooker cool down. My suggestion is that you cut off that seal tout suite. That should fix it!

No matter, she'll just write to the manufacturer or retailer so she'll get
coupons for more. She will then become intolerant to them, but no need to
worry as that will resolve on its own within a month.
