At the snack bar, I mean. Not sure when they added it to the menu but it
has pinto beans. I prefer kidney. I guess the pinto are cheaper. I didn't try it today but I might at some point. Anyone else tried it? |

However, I do know that my local supermarket, which pales in comparison to the likes of Publix, has a salad bar and a couple of 'soup of the day' offerings. I imagine that, at least during the winter, you can find chili there. That kind of thing is the norm where I live. I did once buy a container of chili at Whole Foods, you could serve yourself a couple of different sizes, I think. Just wanted to try it and I was hungry. It wasn't bad, but I make better and it's really an expensive way to eat. nancy |

I've never actually looked for it. I do know I've never seen any sort of seating area. That's what I think of when I think of a "snack bar". Gotta have at least a couple of tables & a couple of chairs, right? Maybe it's just me but I've never seen people walking around in a store eating food from a snack bar. (Keep in mind there is no Costco nearby and the Demo Dollies at Publix or Food Lion are never offering more than a bite.) > I did once buy a container of chili at Whole Foods, you could > serve yourself a couple of different sizes, I think. Likely it came out of a can. If she can make better chili at home sans pinto beans that's what she should do. It's her choice. Me, I try not to go shopping when I'm hungry. It doesn't always work out that way but I don't go looking for a snack bar. I just finish my shopping and go home and have a bite to eat. YMMV Jill |

Most everyone sitting there has a cart Our Home Depot does not have a snack bar but I would guess it is similar. |

But that's a lunch counter with seating, right? (I remember a Woolworth's lunch counter when I worked retail in a Mall in the 1970's.) I don't think that's what Julie is talking about. She's talking about the same place (or was that Target?!) where she used to buy nachos with Cheese Whiz-like sauce on tortilla chips. Then she complained because it didn't agree with her digestive system. I remember this because it sounded like the cheap "nachos" I saw on a menu at the snack bar at the drive-in movies in the 1970's. I didn't buy them then, either. Yes, I know, she merely asked has anyone tried it the chili. No, I have not. I wouldn't, because I don't look for lunch at a grocery store. I buy ingredients for cooking there. Jill |

He would take us there for dinner sometimes. He always got the steak. To get that, one had to go to the meat counter and purchase the steak that they wanted. Then they took it to the lunch counter to be cooked. I don't know the cost of this meal but it was either free or quite cheap. They cooked your steak to your liking and added a baked potato and salad. This was only available at dinner time and not lunch. My mom and I usually had lunch there on Saturdays and it was worked into our shopping. We went to at least three different stores on each shopping trip and this was the last one. I almost always had a stuffed tomato or cottage cheese and fruit and maybe some soup. It made for a very inexpensive meal. |

Trader Joe's always has coffee samples and demonstrates some product, but I don't bother with samples unless I'm completely interested in what they're showing. I ended up buying all the components to a yummy salad they were demonstrating... which meant I spent $10 on a tiny bottle of balsamic vinegar (recreating that salad was totally worth the cost). -- sf |

The stores where I shop sometimes have samples. It is rarely anything that I would be interested in. It is pretty much like the concept of coupons for me. I usually only get them for things I am not likely to buy. I am not in the habit of trying something new just because of the coupon. The last time I did that was for a breakfast cereal. It looked to be a fairly healthful one, with lots of fibre. It was horrible. I think it was developed in conjunction with the development of composite materials for stealth aircraft. The name even reinforced that idea.... Vector. |

Many years ago when our mall was new, they had a cheap Mexican place that was good. We did go there and we did eat. Often we went there just to eat. I hate malls and I have no need to shop in any of their stores. So now I just don't go there. Haven't been there for years. |

However, with me being diabetic, I never know when low blood sugar might strike and I might need to eat. And yes, I do keep food with me at all times. It's just nice to know that the chili would be an option if I were there and needed to eat. |

I love the chicken salad, tho I know they had a problem with it, and their shrimp salad is excellent I often buy the prepared casseroles, like chicken Alfredo and like it all. Anyone else tried it? Sounds like a good idea. As far as I know it's not served here. It's probably because chili is served with rice in Hawaii and Costco would have to implement a system of handling cooked rice. That might take some doing at a corporate level. OTOH, serving rice opens a whole new slew of menu items possible. They could serve chili with hot dogs and rice or rice and roasted chicken. Of course, this would disrupt that well-oiled, limited menu, food service system they already have in place. |

Anyone else tried it? When in the mood for not cooking I will buy a family sized bucket of chile from Wendys. Nothing special, but I doll it up a bit by sauteeing mushrooms and onions and bellpeppers and jalapeno for 6 minutes or so, then adding sliced garlic and a bunch or two of chopped parsely with 2 or 3 chopped up roma tomatoes to the mix. I can go 6 days on the stuff, eating it with rice. I am not a cook, more of a prepper. And when I say I eat the same thing 6 days in a row, that's just one meal. I have another meal the same days that is different. This week I made my own beans, kidneys - not the ultra dark kind, the light red. Then I sauteed the same stuff I normally toss into Wendys chile and tossed it into my own beans when they were done cooking. Not bad. TJ |
