I thought I had plenty of food here but my fridge went all Mother Hubbard on
me while in the hospital. It did not help that we had a visitor over who has the appetite of a 12 year old boy! And I am just not up to grocery shopping. Plus my asking someone to go get things for me fell on deaf ears. So I place an order at Safeway for delivery. I decided that I wanted steak so I put in the search term and saw what I thought was a small steak, marinated in garlic. I ordered three. They arrived. They are huge and I am not sure they are steak! I also know that had I seen them in the store or worse yet read the package, I never would have bought them. But now I have three and it seems they should be grilled. I have no grill. This is what they a http://shop.safeway.com/ecom/search?...Info_188010013 It does say something on the package about making them in the oven which I will have to do, but... Is anyone here familiar with such meat? I am hoping that Angela can read the directions because I can't. The tiny print and the color of the print made me give up. I could only make out oven and 375 degrees. Thanks! |

Might be this: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/roasted...prod5260040.ip It's this but no pic. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/cal...illet-43726922 Might actually be a filet of beef like a roast? |

Thanks for that. A petit beef filet is a steak. I have no idea what it is you're going to have delivered. There are no Safeway stores or Sams Clubs anywhere near where I shop. I do hope you are not disappointed. Oh, and I wouldn't cook the steaks in the oven unless you're using the broiler Surely you've heard of pan-frying or even using a grill pan on the stovetop? If you aren't able to stand on your feet to do that please do put the steaks in the freezer. Until such time as you can cook them properly. You do NOT have to own a grill to produce nicely cooked steaks. Jill |

They don't look like steaks which is why I asked. Says grill or oven, 375 degrees. And why couldn't I stand on my feet? I will not put uncooked meat in the freezer. If I do, it will stay there until I throw it out. I've said that time and time again. They will keep till the 22nd so I plan to make them by then. I am just wondering what exactly I bought. |

Many professional cooks in restaurants begin by searing a steak in a grill pan and then finishing it in an oven. Some do it in reverse, cooking it in the oven and then finishing it with a sear. I take lessons with a former restaurant chef and we've used that technique many times. Always turns out well, at least as far as I can taste. |

I'd take them out at 115 degrees and let rest 10 minutes. Filet, the tenderloin, is very lean and if overdone will be dried out. |

I'll bet it's not the best filet. Probably not bad, I mean how bad can it be? But it's not not the best. I'll bet Straub's $37.99/lb for the whole filet! Now THAT'S a good filet!! (I was looking at it while they ground me some more "ground beast"!) http://straubs.com John Kuthe... |

There is a kielbasa but it's fine. I did have to throw out half of a cucumber, some carrots, tiny orange thingies and cottage cheese. Just bought that too. Should have checked the date on it. It was moldy. But I didn't come here to argue about my family. I asked if anyone was familiar with this meat. |

You said in another message that you have said this "time and time again," but you could have a great many steaks frozen and ready to go. Otherwise, it sounds like there will be a great deal of waste because of the quantity you described. It's the easiest thing in the world to freeze meat, then cook it later. I hope you are feeling well. MaryL |

For one thing, I have no room for it. For another, if I put it in there, I will never take it out to defrost it. And I hate microwave defrosting. I have had to live in places where I was forced to freeze meat. I just plain don't like it. I don't like to do it and I don't like the end results. Might be easy. But easy isn't always good. |

No wonder your mom insists on eating at a restaurant > when you are with her. Not when *I* am with her. Both of my parents hated eating at home. They only ever wanted to dine out and my mom hated to cook. My dad and I watched cooking shows together. He always wanted to cook but beyond a few very simple things, he was a failure at it. Neither of them liked to stay home and always wanted to be out doing things. So my life was a series of vacations away from home, day trips, road trips and visiting people. I can remember being so angry because all I wanted to do was stay home and do my school work. Keep in mind that I was also doing a lot of activities. Some by choice and some not. Swim lessons, dance lessons, teaching dance, drama, choir, pep club, school mascot, Decca, Jr. Achievement, church things, and then when older, employment. So being at home and being able to just hang out in my room was something I didn't often get to do. Mostly days like that came about when everyone else was too sick to go out and chances are then, I was too. Once I got my own place, I just wanted to stay in it. And I did do that for the first few months. Didn't go out except to shop and go to work. Cut all ties with my family except for my brother because I was just that fed up with it all. I got over that when I realized that I would just have to accept them for who they were and to limit my time with them. So a restaurant meal was okay once a week. They are not the chatty type. You won't find them enjoying coffee and dessert. They want their food, want to wolf it down and go. Me? I *am* a chatter. I wanted to laugh when I was in the hospital and my brother was advocating for me because I was too out of it to do otherwise. This was when they were insisting that I had to go home. I think this is where Jill got the mistaken idea that I am not supposed to walk. At that point in time, I could not walk. I was so out of it and dizzy. I felt like they pushed me from the gurney into a black abyss with some weird colored sparkles. Somehow I got into the hospital bed and hooked up to the IV and other things. I can remember the nurse telling my brother that I was perfectly fine and acting normally. Then he snapped at her something like... This is not normal. This is not her. She never shuts up. If she were fine, she would be talking to you. And I would. My SIL said the same. This is why Angela hates to go shopping with me. She's an introvert an I am not. I will talk to anyone and I do. So even what should be a quick trip like today could take me an hour, especially if I run into some people I know who are also chatty and I haven't seen in a while. I can see why wouldn't like it. Anyway... Husband is not so much of a homebody given his 'druthers. He likes to go out and do things but right now that isn't much of an option for reasons I won't get into here. Angela and I like to stay home and play with the cats. Yes, we both like to get out sometimes. But there is no strong urge for us to have to have activity all the time. And we prefer to eat at home. We can stay in our lounging clothes, watch TV, use the computer, read a book, sit on the couch or whatever we want to do while eating. And we don't have the annoying drive to and from the restaurant. We also don't have to deal with any other annoying people who might be in there. Also, the constant dining out when I was younger and also on our cross country moves got wearing. I can't expect another person to understand this is this wasn't their life. I gather that most people either eat fast food or dine out only on special occasions. We didn't eat much fast food. I always insisted on Mexican and we did get that sometimes. And it was good. But we did sometimes dine at places that I hated or at best would rather not. Like Italian, seafood, Chinese, Greek. I didn't know enough in those days about Greek food. I actually do like some of it but my parents always insisted that we get Souvlaki because it was sooo good. I hated the stuff. So a restaurant meal there might mean my leaving hungry because I couldn't force the food down beyond a bite or two. Also in those days, many places had good salad bars. If that was an option that was what I ate. So the food wasn't always bad. It was just that a meal took at least two hours our of my day. The driving there and back included. Yeah, a meal at home might take that too if you count the shopping and prep time. But at least I am still at home and can do other things. If there is one thing I hate, hate, hate, it is driving around. Each time I do have to go out, I combine as many other things into the trip as I can so I don't have to go out again. I hate having to drive to just one place for just one thing. Today will be an exception. I am going stir crazy. I need to get out and see people and I do need food and medicine. |

Yet she has no room to freeze raw meat. As for defrosting, it's been discussed many times over the years. Place the (wrapped) frozen meat in a pan of *cold* water. It will thaw out very quickly. All that is required is a little advance planning. Of course that won't satisfy the guy with the "must have dinner NOW" mentality. Everyone knows how I feel about that particular attitude. Jill |

I don't like to freeze raw meat. I don't care if my freezer was empty, I wouldn't want to do it. I was fine with the raw turkey breast from Schwans. Just heat and eat. But... I was the only one who liked it but I didn't like it any better than canned turkey so... Won't buy it again. > > As for defrosting, it's been discussed many times over the years. Of course > that won't satisfy the guy with the "must have dinner NOW" mentality. > Everyone knows how I feel about that particular attitude. Right. And that's something I won't do. I do advance plan meals sometimes. But I can't always do that. I also am surrounded by grocery stores, some of which sell really good meat. I can buy it as needed. The things I do stockpile are canned goods, pasta and other things that will keep for long periods of time. This allows me to buy them when I find good deals on them. Me? I could live without meat. I have. I do try to eat some twice a week or so just so I don't go anemic. That may not even be an issue for me now given menopause. Angela doesn't eat much meat either. So of all the foods that come into our house, meat is something I buy in much lesser quantities. I might buy 2-3 packages a week but I also usually have something like sausages or ham that will keep for a while. And I always have canned turkey, chicken and tuna. Now I suppose if I could find some sort of super good deals on meat, then I might freeze it like I used to. But I don't. Once in a while I will find a package or two of muchly marked down meat. Usually small packages and just enough for a meal. If I see those and I have nothing planned for dinner that night, I might buy them. But in general, the price of meat is not something I even think about. I usually buy the pricier kind such as grass fed beef. This was an exception because it was an online order, placed just after I got out of the hospital and wasn't thinking clearly. No comment about the meat. I served some last night. I would have heard comments if it was truly outstanding or really bad. He ate all that was on his plate. I will make the pork chops tonight and probably a different side. That way there will be leftover meat and potatoes and whatever other side because I may not be here on Wed. at dinner time. I have my follow-up from my surgery. Oh snap! Just realized that I failed to serve the garlic green beans that I bought. I just looked up what all they put in my IV or injected me with for the surgery and I think those things took part of my mind away. Either that or it's because my thyroid is not in range. I am having a severe failure to remember stuff. The other two packages do not expire until Feb. 2. That gives me plenty enough time to cook them and not involve the freezer. I do have two ham steaks to use up soon. I don't mind putting those in the freezer if need be. They're flat, don't take up much room and can easily be reheated from the frozen state in a matter of minutes. I probably won't be buying any more meat for the rest of this month except for some chicken that Angela asked for, if they have it in stock. It is precooked and I probably will buy one of those for the freezer because I don't intend to go to the store that sells it for a long time, unless I have to have an other visit to that Drs. office. The Super Walmart is on my way home from there. |
